The Medical Assistant I provides entry-level clinical and administrative support to providers and care teams within Clinical Operations. The role helps prepare patients and examination areas, collect and document routine patient information, assist with office-based care activities within assigned training and practice procedures, and support efficient patient flow. The Medical Assistant I works under established protocols and escalates questions, unusual findings, and matters outside role scope to the appropriate licensed clinician or supervisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare examination rooms before and between patient visits by cleaning and stocking assigned areas, confirming necessary supplies, and maintaining an orderly environment. Room patients and complete routine intake activities, including obtaining and documenting vital signs, medical history updates, medication lists, allergies, chief concerns, and other information required by practice workflows. Document patient information accurately and promptly in the electronic health record using approved templates, workflows, and terminology. Assist providers with patient examinations, procedures, and treatments as directed and within assigned training, competency, and practice procedures. Perform approved clinical support tasks, such as point-of-care testing, specimen collection or handling, injections, immunizations, electrocardiograms, or other delegated duties, when trained, authorized, and assigned. Prepare, label, route, store, and document specimens and test materials according to established collection, handling, and tracking procedures. Support medication-related workflows by updating medication information, preparing refill requests for clinical review, and communicating approved information to patients as directed. Process routine clinical messages, test-result follow-up tasks, referral-related documentation, prior-authorization support materials, and patient requests according to established workflows and escalation requirements. Monitor provider schedules and patient flow; communicate delays, rooming needs, and routine barriers to the care team to support timely visits. Maintain clinical supplies and equipment in assigned areas, report low inventory or malfunctioning equipment, and support routine stocking and readiness activities. Operational Responsibilities Complete pre-visit preparation activities, including reviewing schedules, identifying missing routine information, and preparing charts or visit materials as assigned. Maintain organized work queues, task lists, logs, and clinical documentation to support timely follow-up and continuity of care. Assist with daily opening, closing, room-turnover, and clinic-readiness activities according to established department procedures. Participate in training, competency validation, workflow updates, and process-improvement activities relevant to medical assistant responsibilities. Communication & Collaboration Coordinate with providers, nurses, front-office staff, referral teams, and other departments to support complete patient visits and timely follow-up. Communicate patient needs, relevant intake information, abnormal or unexpected findings, and visit-status updates clearly to the appropriate clinical team member. Use professional, respectful, and patient-centered communication when interacting with patients, families, colleagues, and external healthcare partners. Escalate clinical questions, patient complaints, safety concerns, and tasks outside assigned scope to the appropriate licensed clinician or supervisor. Quality & Compliance Follow established practice procedures for patient identification, documentation, infection prevention, specimen handling, medication-related workflows, and equipment use. Perform assigned duties only within validated training, demonstrated competency, delegated authority, and applicable practice procedures. Protect patient and practice information by using approved systems and following confidentiality, privacy, and information-security requirements. Report errors, near misses, safety concerns, equipment problems, documentation discrepancies, and compliance concerns through established channels. Performance Expectations Completes patient intake, room preparation, documentation, and assigned follow-up activities accurately and within expected timeframes. Demonstrates reliable attendance, preparedness, task prioritization, and follow-through in a fast-paced clinical setting. Maintains professional, compassionate, and respectful interactions with patients and coworkers. Uses feedback, training, and supervision to build proficiency in clinical workflows and role-specific competencies. Supports efficient patient flow while recognizing limits of authority and escalating concerns promptly.
QUALIFICATIONS
