$111,000-$167,000 annually Position Summary The Pathologists' Assistant performs macroscopic evaluation, dissection, and gross description of surgical specimens ranging from routine biopsies to complex oncologic cases. This position independently manages gross pro-section, including specimen sampling and reporting, and collaborates closely with pathologists during dissections and intraoperative consultations to support diagnostic accuracy and cancer staging. The Pathologists' Assistant also serves as a clinical partner to pathologists and laboratory leadership while supporting efficient gross room operations, specimen processing, quality, and regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities Perform macroscopic examination, dissection, and tissue selection for routine and complex surgical specimens. Prioritize and manage specimens according to CAP Cancer Protocols and the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual. Ensure appropriate accessioning, labeling, documentation, and specimen handling. Review clinical history, imaging, laboratory results, radiographs, and operative records to guide appropriate specimen dissection. Perform specialized procedures including decalcification, tumor mapping, bone saw operation, renal biopsy preparation, muscle and nerve biopsy preparation, and bone marrow aspirate/biopsy preparation. Assist with intraoperative consultations, including specimen adequacy and margin evaluation. Collect tissue for ancillary testing, including lymphoma protocols and flow cytometry. Prepare specimens for electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and light microscopy when required. Dictate accurate gross descriptions for pathology reports and ensure essential data elements and CPT coding are included. Download and print cassettes through the LIS as needed for tissue submission. Load tissue processors and troubleshoot operational issues. Maintain photographic documentation and assist with imaging for tumor boards, surgeon requests, and research protocols. Maintain and troubleshoot voice recognition and gross room information systems. Maintain accurate equipment records, inventory, and required documentation. Train and mentor grossing technologists and maintain training documentation. Communicate effectively with pathologists and histology staff to support laboratory workflow. Complete required continuing education, annual training, and regulatory documentation. Maintain compliance with laboratory policies, procedures, and accrediting agency requirements. Education & Experience Requirements Bachelor's or Master's degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program or equivalent. Prior laboratory experience preferred. Less than one year of laboratory experience may be considered. AAPA Certified Pathologists' Assistant certification required upon hire. New York State Pathologists' Assistant license required upon hire. ASCP certification preferred. Ability to maintain required continuing education, including 60 ASCP-approved CME credits over a three-year period, with the majority in advanced-level anatomic pathology. Work is performed in a pathology/gross room laboratory environment. Position involves handling surgical and biological specimens and operating specialized laboratory equipment. Requires adherence to laboratory safety, regulatory, and infection-control procedures.
