Orthopedics Medical Assistant
Job Description
Burlington Orthopedics is seeking a highly organized, dependable, and patient-focused Orthopedic Medical Assistant to work directly with a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in total hip replacement. This is a hands-on private-practice role focused on three priorities: thorough precharting, efficient clinic flow, and real-time documentation support. The MA is a key member of the clinical team and helps ensure that every patient visit is prepared, efficient, and well coordinated. The MA will work closely with the surgeon, registered nurse, and practice director. This is a full-time position with daytime hours and benefits that are open to negotiation. Core Responsibilities
- Prechart all scheduled visits in eClinicalWorks (eCW), including relevant history, prior notes, medications, allergies, imaging, labs, and outside records.
- Contact the patient by phone and obtain answers relating to medical history and prior treatment for their principal complaint.
- Obtain missing imaging, medical clearances, referral records, and other documentation before appointments.
- Identify and resolve missing information or outstanding items in advance.
- Prepare preoperative and postoperative visits using appropriate templates and checklists.
- Maintain accurate clinical data and follow through on EHR tasks and messages.
- Room patients promptly and keep clinic running efficiently and on schedule.
- Obtain and document vital signs, medications, allergies. Confirm chief complaint, and interval history.
- Assure that required imaging and other studies are available before the surgeon enters the room.
- Anticipate clinical needs including wound care supplies, educational materials and procedure setup.
- Assist within scope with wound checks, dressing changes, staple/suture removal, injections, and minor procedures.
- Maintain clean, stocked, and organized clinical areas.
- Provide real-time documentation support during patient encounters, especially for scribing during physical examination.
- Document examination findings and, as directed, assessment and plan in eCW.
- Enter or queue imaging, lab, referral, DME, PT, prescription, and surgical scheduling orders for surgeon review.
- Contact patients prior to their visit and remind them to arrive early for x-rays if needed.
- Prepare patient instructions, work notes, and correspondence.
- Learn and consistently use the surgeon's preferred templates and documentation style.
- Help coordinate patients throughout the joint replacement process, from consultation through postoperative care.
- Coordinate clearances, imaging, records, and follow-up with surgical facilities, primary care offices, and physical therapy.
- Reinforce surgeon-directed preoperative and postoperative instructions.
- Triage calls and portal messages according to protocol and escalate clinical concerns appropriately.
- Provide professional, compassionate communication to patients and families. Qualifications
- Prior Medical Assistant experience, preferably in an orthopedic, surgical, or specialty outpatient practice.
- Strong precharting, rooming, and vital-sign skills.
- Excellent EHR and computer skills; eClinicalWorks experience strongly preferred.
- Exceptional organization, attention to detail, follow-through, and time management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Dependable attendance, punctuality, and ability to work effectively in a small team that includes an MD, practice director, RN, front desk CSRs and scheduler.
- Orthopedic or total joint replacement experience.
- Clinical scribing experience.
- Experience with surgical clearances, imaging, labs, outside records, and postoperative care.
- CMA or RMA certification.
