Job Description
Position Summary This position is a for a full-time exempt Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant). This role is with a private practice that supports a high-acuity Radiation Oncology service at John H. Stroger Hospital. The APP provides comprehensive care across outpatient, inpatient, urgent, and survivorship settings, working closely with Radiation Oncologists responsible for treatment planning to ensure coordinated care, timely communication, and safe delivery of radiation therapy. The APP must be familiar with radiation therapy principles, including dose and fractionation, organ-at-risk constraints, dose limits, stereotactic techniques (SRS/SBRT), radiation safety, treatment equipment, immobilization devices, patient positioning, and simulation processes (CT, MRI). Schedule flexibility is essential, particularly when covering inpatient service or responding to urgent consults. Prior oncology experience is required, and radiation oncology experience is strongly preferred due to the complexity and acuity of the patient population. Core Responsibilities Outpatient & On-Treatment Care Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical history, physical examination, and symptom evaluation. Collaborate with Radiation Oncologists to develop and implement individualized treatment plans, working closely with the treating physician performing planning. Manage logistics and coordination of patient treatments, including simulation and daily therapy. Monitor and manage acute and chronic toxicities from radiation and concurrent systemic therapy. Prescribe medications and supportive therapies within APP scope and institutional guidelines. Provide patient and family education on treatment expectations, side eƯects, and post-treatment care. Facilitate referrals to supportive services such as nutrition, social work, palliative care, and survivorship programs. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, and professional development activities. Demonstrate willingness to learn and apply coding principles, including E/M documentation, CPT/ICD-10 coding, and radiation oncology-specific billing requirements. Ensure adherence to radiation safety principles and institutional policies. Inpatient & Urgent Care Perform initial histories and physicals for inpatients requiring emergency or palliative radiation evaluation. Coordinate urgent CT simulation and same-day/next-day radiation treatments, communicating closely with the treating Radiation Oncologist. Triage acute patient issues and screen inpatient/outpatient consults. Provide follow-up care for uncomplicated cases and assist in transitions from inpatient to outpatient care. Staff Radiation Oncology survivorship clinics. Demonstrate schedule flexibility, including variable end times when covering inpatient service or urgent consults. Experience Requirements Minimum 2-3 years of oncology or radiation oncology nursing/APP experience. Radiation oncology experience strongly preferred. Skills & Competencies Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills. Expertise in managing complex oncology patients receiving multimodal therapies. Excellent communication, teaching, and patient counseling skills. Ability to work eƯectively within a multidisciplinary team (physicians, nursing, physics, dosimetry, social work, etc.). Knowledge of oncologic pharmacology, radiation therapy protocols, stereotactic techniques, and evidence-based practice guidelines. Familiarity with radiation safety, immobilization devices, patient positioning, and simulation workflows. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus. Education & Licensure Master's degree in Nursing (NP) or Physician Assistant Studies (PA) from an accredited program. Current state licensure as an NP or PA. National certification as appropriate (FNP, AGACNP, AGPCNP, or PA-C). Current BLS certification. Safety, Compliance & Quality Follow radiation safety protocols, departmental policies, and infection prevention standards at all times. Participate in quality assurance initiatives, audits, and departmental training. Uphold all regulatory, ethical, and professional standards of care, including HIPAA compliance
