GENERAL OVERVIEW

Performs secretarial and direct patient care duties for a designated unit. Maintains the medical record, performs direct patient care for all types of patients.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Accurately documents vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection and all other treatments. (20%) Transcribes orders in accordance with policies and procedures subject to the approval of a licensed nurse. Asks for clarification when necessary. (30%) Performs clerical duties related to admission, transfer and discharge, maintenance of patient activities for the records, interdepartmental communications and unit reception. (30%) Demonstrates effective communication (verbal and written) with patients, families, physicians and other healthcare team members regarding patient care. (20%) Performs other duties as assigned or required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum High school diploma or GED; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 1 year of patient care and/or administrative experience Preferred Previous unit secretary experience or graduate of an approved unit secretary program. Experience as a PCA or EMT.

Casual Working Schedule:

The candidate will need to pick up 24 hours in a 6-week schedule with one shift being a weekend. Additionally, casual employees need to work minimal of 2 holidays (one winter and one summer).

Additional Employment Requirements:
