This role blends the flexibility of a traditional mother's helper (light supervision, activities, household support) with the added comfort of experience around neurodivergent or developmentally disabled kids. You won't need to be a clinical provider — but you should feel confident, calm, and genuinely engaged around a child who communicates and plays a little differently. Responsibilities Provide attentive supervision and companionship during scheduled hours Support daily routines (mealtimes, hygiene, transitions between activities) Engage in play, sensory activities, or preferred interests to keep the child happy and regulated Assist with basic communication supports (following visual schedules, AAC devices, or simple sign/gesture cues, as applicable) Help maintain a calm, predictable environment, especially during transitions Light household tasks tied to the child's care (tidying play areas, preparing snacks, laundering care items) Communicate clearly with parents about the day — wins, challenges, and anything worth noting Follow any behavior support strategies or safety plans provided by the family Qualifications Prior experience with children or individuals who have special needs (developmental disabilities, autism, sensory processing differences, or similar) — paid, volunteer, or personal caregiving experience all count Patient, flexible, and comfortable with unpredictability Comfortable with a child who may be minimally verbal or communicates non-traditionally Prior experience with children or individuals who have special needs (developmental disabilities, autism, sensory processing differences, or similar) — paid, volunteer, or personal caregiving experience all count
