Job Description

Mission Statement The Shepherd's Hand is a Christian nonprofit organization committed to serving individuals experiencing homelessness and economic hardship with dignity, compassion, and respect. Through our Resource Center and Emergency Shelter, we provide essential services, supportive resources, and connections to opportunities that promote safety, stability, and self-sufficiency. Our work is strengthened through partnerships with individuals, volunteers, organizations, and community agencies who share our commitment to providing hope and meaningful support to those in need. Position Summary Shelter Staff are responsible for helping maintain a safe, secure, respectful, and supportive environment for guests of The Shepherd's Hand Emergency Shelter. This is a direct-service position requiring professionalism, sound judgment, reliability, and the ability to respond effectively to a variety of guest needs and situations. Shelter Staff oversee day-to-day shelter operations during their assigned shifts, monitor guest safety and compliance with shelter policies, provide appropriate support and de-escalation, respond to emergencies, complete required documentation, assist with meals and facility upkeep, oversee kenneled pets, and transport guests as assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, welcoming, and orderly shelter environment.
  • Monitor guest activities and interactions and consistently enforce shelter rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Treat all guests with dignity and respect while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Provide appropriate de-escalation and crisis intervention when behavioral or emotional concerns arise.
  • Respond promptly to medical, behavioral, safety, or security emergencies and follow established emergency procedures.
  • Contact emergency services or supervisory staff when circumstances require additional assistance.
  • Complete accurate and timely shift documentation, including daily logs, guest records, incident reports, and other required documentation.
  • Conduct routine facility, safety, and security checks throughout the assigned shift.
  • Perform cleaning and housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean, sanitary, organized, and safe shelter environment.
  • Prepare and serve meals for shelter guests in accordance with established food safety procedures and guidance from The Shepherd's Hand Kitchen Manager.
  • Safely transport guests between The Shepherd's Hand Resource Center and The Shepherd's Hand Emergency Shelter using a 12-passenger van.
  • Provide other approved guest transportation when assigned.
  • Oversee pets housed in designated kennel areas and ensure shelter policies regarding animals are followed.
  • Communicate relevant guest concerns, incidents, facility issues, and shift information to incoming staff and supervisors.
  • Work cooperatively with other shelter staff, The Shepherd's Hand employees, volunteers, service providers, and community partners.
  • Protect confidential guest and organizational information.
  • Maintain professionalism, dependability, and appropriate boundaries at all times.
  • Complete required training and follow all organizational safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are reasonably related to shelter operations. Required and Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Education or training in human services, social services, behavioral health, psychology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a homeless shelter, residential program, human services, behavioral health, crisis response, or similar environment is strongly preferred.
  • Individuals with relevant lived experience, including lived experience of homelessness, are encouraged to apply.
  • Current CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate a 12-passenger van.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background screening.
  • Ability to complete drug testing as required.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in stressful, unpredictable, or emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life circumstances.
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to complete documentation, reports, and other required records.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Dependability and ability to report to scheduled shifts consistently and on time.
  • Commitment to serving individuals experiencing homelessness with dignity, compassion, consistency, and respect. Work Schedule and Conditions
  • This is a seasonal shelter position operating approximately mid-October through the end of April.
  • Staff may be assigned evening or overnight shifts.
  • Regular availability to work every other weekend and every other holiday is an essential scheduling requirement of this position.
  • Shelter operations require staffing seven days per week, including weekends and holidays.
  • Staff must remain awake, alert, and able to perform all assigned responsibilities throughout their scheduled shift.
  • Work involves frequent interaction with individuals who may be experiencing homelessness, crisis, behavioral health concerns, substance use issues, or other challenging circumstances.
  • Staff may encounter stressful, emotionally difficult, or unpredictable situations and must respond professionally and according to established procedures.
  • Position requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to safely operate an organizational vehicle in varying road and weather conditions.
  • Staff are expected to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and use trauma-informed, respectful approaches when interacting with guests.
Pay:
$18.00 - $22.00 per hour Expected hours: 32.0 - 40.0 per week
