A Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner provides primary care and nursing care to infant, children and adolescent patients. Performs physical exams, orders diagnostic tests, and provides medications. Works in a physician's office or other healthcare facility, under the direction of a physician. Performs work similar to that of a physician assistant but has different medical training and degree.
This is a professional position responsible for providing healthcare services to students through University Health Services under the supervision of a physician. Responsible for conducting complete physicals and providing treatment, and counseling patients. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director of Health Services Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Nurse Practitioner:
Master's degree from an accredited nurse practitioner program is required. No direct experience is required. Knowledge of nursing techniques, principles, and procedures is required. Knowledge of methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment is required. License by the Texas Board of Nursing to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is required. Experience in gynecology is preferred. Candidates without a current Texas license will be considered if license can be obtained prior to start date.
Physician Assistant:
Bachelor's degree is required. Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program is required. No direct experience is required. Knowledge of methods and procedures in the field of general medicine and principles of the development, implementation, and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans is required. License by the Texas Physician Assistant Board under the Texas Medical Board to practice as a physician assistant is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is required. Experience in gynecology is preferred. Candidates without current Texas license will be considered if license can be obtained prior to start date.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides healthcare services to students through the outpatient student health clinic. Makes diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients, collaborating and/or consulting with medical staff as appropriate. Provides patients with information regarding medications, treatments, anticipated outcomes, and referrals. Assesses, diagnoses, and treats minor injuries and illnesses. Orders and interprets laboratory tests. Prescribes medication with prescriptive authority delegated by the supervising physician. Evaluates athletes for medical conditions that would prevent athletic participation. Obtains, compiles, and records patients' medical data legibly and in a timely manner. Assists supervising physician with ensuring protocols, authorizations, and chart reviews are up to date and in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and guidelines. Maintains professional atmosphere, confidentiality of medical records, and compassion for each patient.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists with community outreach as requested, including but not limited to health presentations, health fairs, and vaccination clinics. Provides interviews for students on pre-approved health topics. Provides educational opportunities, including but not limited to shadowing in the workplace and preceptorship for nursing and athletic training students. Serves on university committees as assigned. May meet with pharmaceutical representatives. May greet clients, answer phones, check patients into and out of appointments, and schedule appointments and activities. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat physical and mental disorders. Ability to conduct and interpret routine laboratory tests. Ability to obtain and maintain licensure in the State of Texas. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
