Schedule:
Full-time. Various tours are available and will be discussed during the interview. All schedules include rotating weekends and holidays. This position is onsite and does not require travel. Position Summary The John D. Dingell VA Medical Center is seeking Nursing Assistants to provide direct care to Veterans within Geriatrics and Extended Care Service. Nursing Assistants support patient-centered care by monitoring residents, assisting with daily care needs, completing basic nursing procedures, documenting services, and promptly reporting changes in patient condition to appropriate nursing staff. Essential Duties Provide direct care to Veterans and residents. Obtain and document vital signs. Perform blood glucose monitoring and report abnormal results. Observe patients for changes in behavior, mood, skin condition, appetite, or overall health. Report changes in patient condition to nursing staff. Document patient care, observations, and responses. Monitor and document patient intake and output. Provide tracheostomy care within assigned scope. Assist with procedures such as catheterization, colostomy care, skin care, simple dressings, enemas, braces, and prosthetic devices. Assist with patient mobility, transfers, positioning, and use of lift equipment. Reposition residents as required to support pressure-injury prevention. Participate in fall-prevention, nutrition, hydration, and safety rounds. Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free patient areas. Update patient whiteboards each shift. Follow infection-control, safety, and personal protective equipment requirements. Report unsafe conditions and malfunctioning equipment. Support Veterans' independence, dignity, safety, and comfort. Basic Qualifications Applicants must meet applicable VA citizenship requirements and be proficient in spoken and written English. Applicants may meet the basic Nursing Assistant qualification requirement through one of the following: Six months of general experience demonstrating the ability to perform Nursing Assistant duties; OR One year of education above high school with coursework related to Nursing Assistant work; OR Completion of an intensive Nursing Assistant training program of less than one year. Grade Qualifications GS-3 -
Entry Level:
No additional experience beyond the basic requirements. GS-3 Nursing Assistants work under close supervision. GS-4:
One year of specialized Nursing Assistant or related medical experience; or qualifying post-high-school education related to nursing or healthcare. GS-5 -
Full Performance Level:
One year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to GS-4; or qualifying bachelor's-level education with healthcare-related coursework. Preferred Experience Experience in the following areas is preferred: Long-term care Rehabilitation Hospice Physical Requirements This position requires significant physical activity, including: Lifting and carrying 45 pounds or more. Standing and walking for 8-12 hours. Repeated bending, pushing, pulling, and repositioning. Assisting with patient transfers and mobility. Working around patients and potentially contaminated materials. Conditions of Employment Selected applicants must meet applicable federal and VA employment requirements, including: U.S. citizenship requirements. Background investigation. Pre-employment physical. Drug screening. Seasonal influenza vaccination requirements for VA healthcare personnel, subject to applicable exemptions. Completion of federal onboarding requirements. Successful completion of the required federal trial period.
