  • $40/hr (Part-time / non-exempt) Position Summary The Assistant School Nurse is a licensed nurse in the State of Rhode Island who serves alongside the School Nurse to promote and protect the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff.
The Assistant School Nurse supports the daily operation of the School Health Office by providing nursing care, responding to student health needs, maintaining accurate health records, and ensuring a safe and healthy school environment. The Assistant School Nurse assists in ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing school health services while supporting the mission, Catholic identity, and educational philosophy of Saint Philomena School of the Sacred Heart. Essential Responsibilities Student Health Care
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in school nursing practice while providing first aid, illness assessment, and medically prescribed nursing care for students.
  • Assess student health needs prior to dispensing medication or providing treatment in accordance with school health policies, physician orders, and accepted nursing standards.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with the Rhode Island Department of Health Rules and Regulations for School Health Programs, the Saint Philomena School Health Policy and Procedure Manual, and Saint Philomena School Medication Orders.
  • Manage and respond appropriately to student illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies.
  • Maintain familiarity with individual student health care plans, emergency care plans, allergy action plans, diabetes management plans, and other medical documentation.
  • Document all student visits, treatments, medications administered, and parent communications promptly and accurately within the school's electronic health record system. Health Office Operations
  • Assist in the daily operation and organization of the School Health Office.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and well-organized health office environment.
  • Ensure appropriate supplies and equipment are maintained for routine care and emergency response.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student, family, and staff medical information in accordance with applicable privacy laws and professional standards. Communication and Collaboration
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with students, families, faculty, administrators, and outside health care providers regarding student health concerns and care.
  • Collaborate with the School Nurse and school leadership to promote a healthy and safe learning environment.
  • Provide health-related guidance and support to faculty and staff as appropriate. School Health & Safety
  • Serve as the nurse on duty during daily Kindergarten through Grade 8 lunch and recess periods, providing supervision and emergency medical response as needed.
  • Assist with the implementation of emergency preparedness and student health procedures. Professional Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all Rhode Island Department of Health regulations governing school health services.
  • Follow all Saint Philomena School policies and procedures related to student health and safety.
  • Maintain current nursing licensure in the State of Rhode Island and any required RI required certifications.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, sound clinical judgment, flexibility, discretion, and a commitment to continuous professional growth.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the School Nurse or School Leadership Team. Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist students as necessary.
  • Ability to respond quickly to medical emergencies throughout the school campus.
  • Ability to lift or assist with moving up to 40 pounds when necessary for student care.
