Job Overview Position Summary The RN Med/Surg Manager is responsible for the coordination, oversight, implementation, and evaluation of the hospital's infection prevention program, emergency preparedness program, and education in accordance with Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Conditions of Participation, CMS Appendix W, Minnesota Department of Health regulations, OSHA standards, CDC guidance, and applicable accrediting body requirements. This position serves as a clinical leader within the organization and supports safe, high-quality patient care through staff education, regulatory readiness, competency validation, infection surveillance, and emergency management planning. The RN Med/Surg Manager maintains direct patient care responsibilities while supporting nursing leadership functions.
This role includes:
Three (3) 8-hour management/office shifts per week Participation in weekend rotation as scheduled (12 hr/wk) The RN Manager collaborates closely with nursing leadership, providers, department managers, quality staff, and ancillary departments to maintain compliance, promote patient safety, and support staff development across the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Infection Control Serves as the hospital Infection Preventionist and oversees the infection prevention and control program for the facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Develops, implements, and maintains the Infection Prevention and Control Plan in accordance with: CMS CAH Conditions of Participation CDC guidelines OSHA standards Minnesota Department of Health requirements NHSN reporting requirements, when applicable Conducts ongoing surveillance for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) Tracks, trends, analyzes, and reports infection prevention data Investigates infection outbreaks and implements mitigation strategies Ensures compliance with isolation precautions and transmission-based precautions Oversees employee exposure follow-up Monitors hand hygiene and infection prevention compliance practices Participates in antibiotic stewardship initiatives Educates staff on infection prevention standards and best practices Maintains required infection prevention documentation and regulatory readiness Participates in quality improvement and patient safety activities related to infection prevention Serves as liaison with public health agencies as needed Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Serves as coordinator for the hospital Emergency Preparedness Program in accordance with CMS Emergency Preparedness Conditions of Participation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Maintains and updates the hospital Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) Coordinates annual review and revisions of emergency preparedness policies and procedures Ensures compliance with CMS Emergency Preparedness requirements for Critical Access Hospitals Coordinates required emergency preparedness drills and exercises, including: Tabletop exercises Community-based drills Internal disaster exercises Maintains emergency preparedness training and documentation Coordinates after-action reviews and corrective action planning Collaborates with community emergency management agencies and regional partners Assists with hospital incident command system (HICS) preparedness and training Maintains emergency communication plans and resource documentation Assists departments with continuity planning and emergency response education Employee Health Responsibilities Serves as Employee Health Coordinator for hospital staff and supports occupational health, exposure management, and employee wellness initiatives. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Coordinates employee health requirements in accordance with OSHA, CDC, CMS, and Minnesota Department of Health standards Maintains employee health records, immunization tracking, and required occupational health documentation Oversees onboarding health requirements for new employees, including immunizations, TB screening, respirator fit testing coordination, and health clearances Coordinates annual employee health requirements and compliance monitoring Assists with management and follow-up of employee exposures, bloodborne pathogen incidents, and communicable disease concerns Staff illness monitoring and return-to-work guidance Maintains exposure logs and required OSHA documentation Assists with workplace safety education related to infection prevention and employee safety practices Coordinates flu vaccination initiatives and other employee wellness or prevention programs Participates in regulatory readiness activities related to employee health requirements
Educator:
Serves as Nursing Educator for staff and assists with orientation, competency management, and ongoing education.
Responsibilities include:
Coordinates orientation programs for nursing staff and clinical personnel Develops and maintains nursing competency programs Assists with annual skills validations and competency assessments Coordinates education related to: Critical access nursing care Emergency care Medication safety Infection prevention Trauma/stroke readiness Patient safety initiatives Regulatory requirements Supports onboarding and mentorship of new nursing staff Assists with development of policies, procedures, and evidence-based practice initiatives Identifies educational needs through audits, trends, staff feedback, and quality indicators Maintains education records and competency documentation Facilitates mock surveys and regulatory preparedness activities Assists charge nurses and leadership staff with clinical education needs Promotes a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous learning Clinical RN Responsibilities Maintains active bedside nursing responsibilities and functions as a staff RN during scheduled clinical shifts. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Provides direct patient care in accordance with hospital standards and scope of practice Supports care delivery in the Emergency Department, Med/Surg, Swing Bed, and outpatient areas as assigned Functions as charge/resource nurse when needed Demonstrates competency in emergency response and critical patient care situations Assists with staffing support during high census or emergent situations Maintains current clinical competencies required for CAH nursing staff Leadership & Operations Maintains compliance with CMS CAH Conditions of Participation and Appendix W requirements Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities Assists with survey readiness and regulatory compliance activities Participates in interdisciplinary committees as assigned Maintains confidentiality and HIPAA compliance Promotes a positive work environment and professional accountability Demonstrates leadership, professionalism, and effective communication Performs additional duties as assigned by nursing leadership Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Minnesota
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Minimum of 3 years of acute care nursing experience
- Current BLS certification
- ACLS certification within required timeframe
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Knowledge of regulatory and patient safety standards
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Previous leadership or management experience
- Infection Prevention training or certification (CIC preferred)
- Emergency preparedness or incident command training
- Experience in Critical Access Hospital or rural healthcare setting
- TNCC, ENPC, PALS, or trauma/stroke-related education preferred

- Assists the DON in PI processes and performance evaluations as indicated.
- Recommends, coordinates, and carries out educational needs for nursing staff.
- Supervises the nursing staff in assigned programs and functions.
- May offer feedback as indicated to nursing staff in reference to assigned programs and functions.
- Provides leadership and supervision to Med/Surg Department nursing staff and support personnel.
Pay:
$36.77 - $52.00 per hour Expected hours: 36.0 per week
