Qualifications & Desired Background:

Certified or credentialed as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS). Experience working with students who are visually impaired, ideally in educational settings. Strong understanding of orientation and mobility techniques, tools, and adaptive technology. Familiarity with IEP development and progress monitoring for students with visual impairments. Excellent communication skills for collaborating with teachers, families, and related service providers. Compassionate approach, with sensitivity to each students unique capabilities and needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide direct orientation and mobility instruction to students, supporting mastery of safe and effective movement in various environments. Conduct functional mobility assessments and contribute to individualized education plans (IEPs). Collaborate with Teachers for the Visually Impaired and other specialists to ensure coordinated support. Educate staff and families on best practices for fostering student independence. Document student progress, maintain clear records, and offer recommendations for future learning goals. Stay current on instructional best practices, as well as relevant mobility aids and adaptive technology.
