Non-Exempt Job Summary The Ophthalmic Technician Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the ophthalmic technical staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, efficient clinic flow, and accurate diagnostic testing. This role combines hands-on clinical duties with leadership responsibilities, including staff training, scheduling, and quality assurance. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties Perform and oversee comprehensive pre-testing, including visual acuity, refractions, tonometry, visual fields, and pupil evaluations Operate and maintain diagnostic equipment (OCT, fundus photography, topography, A-scan/B-scan, etc.) Administer diagnostic drops and assist physicians during exams and minor procedures Take and document patient histories, including chief complaints and medication lists Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the EMR Supervisory Duties Train, mentor, and evaluate ophthalmic technicians and support staff Work directly with the Office Supervisor to ensure good clinic flow Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate clinic coverage Monitor technician performance, testing accuracy, and adherence to protocols Serve as a liaison between technical staff and physicians/practice management Address performance issues, conduct staff meetings, and lead ongoing education Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and other regulatory standards Manage equipment maintenance schedules, calibration, and inventory of clinical supplies Assist in developing and updating clinic policies and procedures Handle patient flow issues and escalate complex scheduling or patient concerns Qualifications Required High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's degree preferred) Certification as a COA, COT, or COMT (through
JCAHPO/IJCAHPO
) — COT or COMT often preferred for supervisory roles Minimum 3-5 years of experience as an ophthalmic technician Prior leadership, charge tech, or supervisory experience preferred Strong knowledge of ophthalmic testing equipment and procedures Proficiency with EMR systems Skills Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills Ability to train and motivate staff in a fast-paced clinical environment Excellent patient interaction and customer service skills Problem-solving and conflict-resolution abilities Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in clinical testing Physical Requirements Ability to stand/walk for extended periods Manual dexterity for operating diagnostic equipment Work EnvironmentFast-paced outpatient clinical/surgical setting with frequent patient contact, multitasking, and cross-department coordination
