We are looking for an experienced ophthalmic professional who can step into an important clinical role, work closely with the physician, and become a trusted long-term member of our team. This position combines hands-on ophthalmic technician responsibilities with cataract surgical coordination. It is ideal for someone who enjoys patient care, organization, autonomy, and being an integral part of a small practice. An important feature of this role is that the physician currently sees patients three days per week , allowing dedicated time during the workweek for surgical coordination, administrative responsibilities, patient follow-up, workflow organization, and other non-clinical tasks. Responsibilities Ophthalmic Technician Perform comprehensive ophthalmic patient workups, including medical and ocular history, visual acuity, medications, IOP, pupils, motility, and dilation Perform accurate manifest refractions Perform and assist with ophthalmic diagnostic testing and imaging Prepare patients efficiently and accurately for physician examination Assist with cataract evaluations, pre-operative testing, and post-operative visits Provide patient education regarding medications, testing, procedures, and follow-up care Maintain accurate and thorough documentation in the electronic medical record Help maintain efficient clinic flow and anticipate physician and patient needs Assist with clinical organization, supplies, and day-to-day technician workflow Surgical Coordination & Administrative Responsibilities Guide cataract patients through the surgical scheduling and pre-operative process Coordinate surgery dates, pre-operative appointments, and post-operative visits Assist with cataract measurements and pre-operative testing Review surgical instructions and help patients understand what to expect before and after surgery Coordinate required paperwork and communication with the ambulatory surgery center Track upcoming surgical patients and ensure required testing, paperwork, medications, and appointments are completed Complete patient follow-up calls and other surgical coordination tasks Use non-clinic time for administrative work, surgical preparation, workflow organization, and completion of outstanding patient-care tasks Help provide a smooth and organized experience from cataract diagnosis through surgery and post-operative care Required Qualifications Minimum 2 years of ophthalmology experience Current ophthalmic technician certification, such as COA, COT, or COMT Strong ophthalmic technician skills and understanding of common ophthalmic conditions and workflows Proficiency performing manifest refractions Experience performing standard ophthalmic testing and patient workups Excellent patient communication skills Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to work independently and take ownership of clinical responsibilities Dependable, professional, and comfortable working as part of a small team Preferred Qualifications Previous cataract surgical coordination or surgical scheduling experience Experience with cataract pre-operative testing and IOL measurements Experience working with cataract surgery patients Experience with Nextech or another ophthalmology-specific EMR Experience in a comprehensive ophthalmology or surgical ophthalmology practice Previous surgical coordination experience is strongly preferred, but we are willing to train an experienced ophthalmic technician in our specific cataract surgery workflow. No evening or weekend clinic. Compensation & Benefits $24-$27 per hour , depending on ophthalmic experience, certification, and surgical coordination experience.
