The clinical assistant translates the physician's orders into efficient patient care, by assisting the physician with office duties, ophthalmic and surgical procedures. Gathers important medical information, performs visual screening and diagnostic testing prior to Ophthalmologist's visit with patient. Responsible for efficient patient flow and accuracy of patient charts.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

Greets patient, introduces self, and prepares patients for exams and testing. Explains to patient what to expect from technician's work up. Completes a detailed patient history which includes: past medical history (systemic and ocular), family medical history (systemic and ocular), medication history (systemic and ocular), and the chief complaint (reason for the visit). Complete and accurate documentation in patient's electronic health record. Provides patients with explanations regarding their exam. Maintains strictest patient confidentiality. Assists physicians as necessary. Handles patient problems and complaints.

• Checks patient's uncorrected (when applicable) and corrected visual acuity for distance (snellen) and near (jaeger).

Neutralizes eye glasses by manual Lensometry . Is able to measure prism in spectacles and mark optical centers. Performs Auto-Refraction.

Performs subjective refractometry:

cross cylinder technique.

• Performs one or more of the following exams as required for exam: Ishihara Color Vision, Stereo, W4D, Amsler, Confrontational Visual Fields (CVF), Extra Ocular Movements (EOMS), Titmus stereo testing, and BAT.
• Performs Goldman Applanation, Pneumo or TonoPen tonometry. Angle assessment and pupil assessment prior to dilation.
• Performs the following diagnostic testing accurately and is able to troubleshoot poor readings or machine difficulties: Corneal Topography, External and Fundus Photography with any of the available cameras, Optical Coherence Tomography, Specular Microscopy, VEP/ERG, Corneal Pachymetry, LipiScan, TearLab. WaveScan.
• Is able to accurately perform the following

VF's:

HVF and Tangent.

• Assist with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures.
• Knowledge of routinely used in office surgical instruments, such as Vannas scissors, Jeweler's forceps, punctal dilators and lid specula.

Perform skin suture removal. Is able to insert and remove both a soft and hard contact lens, including bandage contact lens insertion. Performs eye patching as instructed by MD. Performs eye irrigation if instructed by MD. Administer eye drops and other medications as directed by the physician. Accurately measure blood pressure, pulse rates. Assist with I & D of chalazions. Skin suture removal.

• Accurately measures Blood Pressure and Pulse Rates. Is familiar with O2 tank and how to administer. Performs first aid in the office as needed. OSHA/handwashing compliance.
• Responsible for care, maintenance and stocking of assigned room(s). Room inventory, knowledge of equipment, maintenance, repair and cleaning.
• Ensures that patient's chart is put up in a timely fashion after technician encounter.

Performs related work as required. Attends required staff and educational meetings as requested. Abides by the policies and procedures of the clinical department and The Regional Eye Center as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
