Job Overview Ophthalmology Lead Technician We are seeking a highly skilled, motivated, and patient-focused Ophthalmology Lead Technician to join our growing ophthalmology team. The Lead Technician will play an essential role in supporting ophthalmologists and optometrist coordinating clinical workflows, assisting with patient care, and ensuring efficient day-to-day clinical operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ophthalmology, excellent clinical and communication skills, and proven experience as a medical scribe for a minimum of 1-2 years . This position requires an individual who can work independently, demonstrate leadership, maintain a high level of professionalism, and effectively support both physicians and clinical staff. The Lead Technician must be willing and able to travel between our McAllen and Edinburg office locations as needed based on business and staffing needs . Flexibility between locations is an essential requirement of this position. Key Responsibilities Assist ophthalmologists with comprehensive eye examinations and clinical procedures, including visual acuity testing, refraction, tonometry, A-scan biometry, and other diagnostic testing. Perform medical scribing duties, accurately documenting physician examinations, assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and other clinical information in the EHR. Support physicians during patient encounters by documenting clinical findings in real time and ensuring accurate and complete medical records. Perform patient intake and preliminary assessments, including obtaining medical and ocular histories, recording vital signs, and updating electronic health records. Operate, maintain, and appropriately prepare ophthalmic diagnostic and imaging equipment, including tonometers, A-scan devices, and other specialized equipment. Perform ophthalmic testing, including visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure measurements, and other diagnostic assessments as directed by the ophthalmologist. Coordinate and support daily clinical workflows to promote efficient patient flow and minimize delays. Provide guidance, training, and support to ophthalmic technicians and other clinical support staff as needed. Assist with onboarding and training of new technicians in clinical procedures, equipment operation, documentation standards, and office protocols. Maintain accurate, timely, and secure patient documentation in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies. Communicate professionally and compassionately with patients, addressing questions and providing clear instructions regarding examinations and procedures. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment while following infection control and safety protocols. Monitor clinical supplies and equipment and communicate supply or maintenance needs to management. Work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, technicians, scribes, and administrative staff to ensure high-quality patient care. Travel between the McAllen and Edinburg office locations as required to meet staffing and business needs. Perform additional clinical, administrative, or operational duties as assigned based on the needs of the practice. Required Qualifications & Experience Minimum 1-2 years of medical scribe experience required. Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry practice strongly preferred. Experience assisting ophthalmologists with patient examinations and diagnostic procedures. Strong knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, physiology, terminology, and common diagnostic procedures. Experience operating ophthalmic equipment such as tonometers, A-scan biometry equipment, and diagnostic imaging devices. Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and medical documentation. Strong ability to accurately document physician-patient encounters in a timely manner. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations, patient privacy, confidentiality, and clinical safety requirements. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment. Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, attention to detail, and commitment to patient care. Ability and willingness to travel between the McAllen and Edinburg locations as business needs require . Previous lead technician, supervisory, or team-lead experience is preferred. Additional Skills & Experience — Consideration for Increased Wage Candidates who possess additional qualifications, advanced skills, or expanded responsibilities may be considered for a higher starting wage . Additional qualifications may include, but are not limited to: Previous experience as a Lead Ophthalmic Technician or Ophthalmology Supervisor . Extensive ophthalmology clinical experience beyond the minimum requirements. Advanced experience with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and imaging systems. Experience with OCT, visual fields, fundus photography, corneal topography, pachymetry, or other advanced diagnostic testing . Strong experience with A-scan and IOL calculations . Experience assisting with or preparing patients for ophthalmic procedures and surgeries. Experience with medical scribing in ophthalmology , including detailed physician documentation and familiarity with ophthalmic diagnoses and treatment plans. Experience training, mentoring, or supervising ophthalmic technicians or other clinical staff. Experience with EHR optimization, clinical documentation improvement, or workflow management. Experience with optical services, including optical prescriptions, measurements, eyewear, and adjustments. Bilingual or multilingual communication skills that support patient care. Experience with inventory management, equipment maintenance, or clinical supply coordination. Demonstrated ability to improve patient flow, clinical efficiency, or office operations. Previous experience working across multiple medical office locations. Additional certifications, specialized training, or relevant healthcare credentials. Compensation will be based on qualifications, experience, demonstrated clinical skills, leadership abilities, and the overall scope of responsibilities. Additional skills or duties may be considered when determining the starting wage and opportunities for advancement. Additional Duties & Flexibility As a Lead Technician, you may be asked to take on additional clinical, administrative, training, or operational responsibilities based on the needs of the practice. Responsibilities may evolve as the practice grows, and flexibility in supporting the team is an important component of this position. The ability to work at both the McAllen and Edinburg locations is required , and the Lead Technician must be willing to travel between locations when needed to support patient volume, staffing, physician schedules, or other business needs.
