Summary of Job :

An Optician assists patients in selecting frames and lenses tailored to their lifestyle, prescription, and style preferences. This role requires technical expertise in measuring, fitting, and ordering eyewear, combined with top-tier customer service skills to drive optical sales and patient satisfaction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Read Prescriptions:

Interpret written directions from optometrists or ophthalmologists.

Take Measurements:

Measure a customer's face, pupillary distance, and eyes for a proper fit.

Recommend Eyewear:

Help customers choose frames, lenses, and special coatings like anti-reflective layers.

Create Work Orders:

Write precise instructions for lab technicians to cut and mount lenses.

Adjust and Repair:

Fix broken frames and bend glasses to fit comfortably on a person's face.

Educate Patients:

Teach new wearers how to insert, remove, and clean contact lenses.

Manage Store Tasks:

Keep inventory stocked, handle sales records, and process billing.

Qualifications and Skills Education:

High school diploma or GED; many complete a 1- to 2-year certificate or associate degree.

People Skills:

Friendly customer service and clear communication.

Technical Skills:

Ability to use optical tools like a lensometer and understand basic measurements. [1, 2, 3, 4]
