Full Job Description Optician & Contact Lens Specialist Position:
Full-Time Position Summary The Optician & Contact Lens Specialist is responsible for providing exceptional patient service while assisting patients with eyeglass frames, lenses, and contact lenses. This position works closely with doctors and clinical staff to ensure prescriptions are accurately fulfilled and patients receive appropriate eyewear and contact lens products. The ideal candidate is friendly, professional, detail-oriented, knowledgeable about optical products, and committed to creating a positive patient experience. Essential Responsibilities Optical Services Assist patients in selecting eyeglass frames based on prescription, lifestyle, personal preferences, and budget. Educate patients about lens materials, coatings, options, and features. Take accurate measurements, including pupillary distance and other required optical measurements. Accurately interpret and verify eyeglass prescriptions. Prepare and submit eyewear orders to optical laboratories. Inspect finished eyewear for accuracy, quality, and proper fit. Make adjustments and minor repairs to frames as appropriate. Dispense completed eyewear and ensure proper fit and patient satisfaction. Explain lens care, frame care, and warranty information. Maintain accurate patient and optical records. Contact Lens Services Assist patients with contact lens selection and ordering according to the doctor's prescription. Teach new contact lens wearers proper insertion, removal, cleaning, and storage techniques. Provide education regarding contact lens hygiene and safe wearing practices. Assist with contact lens trials, follow-up visits, and patient questions. Coordinate contact lens orders, shipments, and inventory. Verify contact lens prescriptions and expiration dates before dispensing. Communicate patient concerns or complications to the appropriate clinical staff or physician. Maintain accurate contact lens records. Patient Service Greet patients warmly and provide professional, courteous service. Answer patient questions regarding eyewear, contact lenses, pricing, orders, and insurance benefits. Provide clear explanations of products and services without pressuring patients. Handle patient concerns professionally and seek assistance when needed. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and clinic policies. Communicate effectively with doctors, technicians, front desk staff, and other team members. Help create a welcoming, organized, and professional optical environment. Administrative & Office Duties Process optical and contact lens sales accurately. Collect payments and assist with insurance verification and billing as assigned. Maintain optical inventory and notify management when products need to be reordered. Track outstanding eyewear and contact lens orders. Follow up with patients regarding delayed, completed, or backordered orders. Maintain clean, organized, and attractive optical displays. Follow clinic procedures for cash handling, documentation, and patient records. Participate in staff meetings and required training. Qualifications Previous optical, optician, contact lens, ophthalmology, or optometry experience preferred. Optical certification or licensure preferred where applicable. Strong customer service and communication skills. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work comfortably with patients of all ages. Ability to explain technical information in an easy-to-understand manner. Basic computer and electronic medical/optical record skills. Ability to multitask in a busy medical office. Professional appearance and dependable work habits. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Preferred Skills Experience with optical point-of-sale systems. Experience with electronic health records. Knowledge of vision insurance plans and optical benefits. Knowledge of current frame and lens products. Experience with contact lens brands and ordering systems. Experience performing frame adjustments and minor repairs. Strong sales and product recommendation skills with a patient-centered approach.
