The Recreation Leader is an entry-level classification in the Community Services Department. Under direct supervision, the Recreation Leader assists with the coordination and implementation of recreation, leisure, educational, and community services programs, classes, activities, special events, youth sports, summer camps, virtual programs, and facility operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives guidance and direction from the Recreation Specialist and/or the Recreation Coordinator and supervision from the Recreation Manager, or designee. May provide basic direction to program participants, volunteers, or activity assistants as assigned. Assists with and conducts recreation programs and activities at City-owned facilities, park sites, and other assigned locations, including virtual programs, summer camps, special events, youth sports, classes, and other recreational activities. Leads and participates in recreation activities such as sports, games, crafts, arts and crafts, dance, outdoor activities, educational activities, and general play for children, youth, adults, and seniors, as assigned. Observes appropriate safety precautions and procedures to help ensure the safety of program participants, staff, volunteers, and facility users. Monitors the behavior of activity and program participants and enforces applicable program rules, policies, and regulations. Organizes and conducts on-site and virtual games, crafts, activities, and other recreation opportunities within established program guidelines. Assists with program planning and provides input and recommendations to the immediate supervisor regarding existing and proposed programs and activities. Keeps score and maintains records for City youth sports programs, as assigned. Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies for program participants and assists with setting up and breaking down equipment and facilities for classes, programs, and events. Ensures recreation equipment and supplies are properly stored and maintained in good condition following classes, programs, and events. Assists with monitoring facility rentals, including evening and weekend rentals, to ensure applicants and users comply with City and department policies and procedures. Assists with inspecting assigned facilities and program areas and reports maintenance, repair, safety, equipment, and operational concerns to the appropriate supervisor. Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, equipment, and other materials before and after programs, events, and functions. Performs routine cleaning of program areas and facilities, including sweeping, mopping, and cleaning bathrooms, as needed. Assists with City and community special events, including community events in parks, parades, holiday events, dinners, and other City-sponsored or non-City-sponsored activities. Monitors volunteers, when assigned, to ensure they are meeting City and department requirements. Maintains accurate participant attendance, activity, equipment, and program records. Prepares routine reports, forms, and other documentation related to assigned programs and activities. Performs routine administrative and clerical tasks in support of recreation programs. Operates computers, department software applications, internet, email, copiers, telephones, and other office equipment in support of assigned duties. Provides accurate information to participants, patrons, families, City departments, outside agencies, and members of the public regarding department programs, classes, facilities, services, schedules, and activities. Responds to routine customer service questions and concerns and refers issues requiring additional authority or assistance to the appropriate supervisor. Assists with registration and enrollment transactions in a controlled point-of-sale environment. Accepts payments for department services, as assigned, in accordance with established procedures. Maintains effective working relationships with participants, patrons, coworkers, volunteers, City staff, community members, vendors, and outside agencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Basic principles, practices, and concepts of community services and recreation. Basic recreation activities, including sports, games, crafts, music, dance, outdoor activities, and general play skills. Basic methods and practices for conducting recreation programs and activities. Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the eleventh grade, or seventeen years of age.
Experience:
Some experience working with groups, children, youth, sports, recreation activities, community programs, or in a customer service environment is desirable.
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment.
