We are in search of a Fitness/Group Fitness Director for our locations to lead a world class Personal Training/Group Fitness experience for our members and guests. Job Summary To effectively manage all personal trainers and group fitness staff, programs and services at Merritt Clubs in order to maximize group fitness attendance, member retention, club profitability, and new member integration. Job Duties and Responsibilities Below are the primary Duties and Responsibilities that will be the basis on which job performance is measured. Lead with action words and make sure it can be measured. Create Growth in the Group fitness classes and person training services by implementing strategies to maximize attendance and maintain appropriate levels of variety for members. Measure fitness attendance and compare to weekly targets. Compare actual cost per head with budgeted cost per head, and track actual group fitness usage verse maximum group fitness usage using our Key Performance Indicators. Manage and exceed the fitness budget by monitoring expenses, payroll, and income. Recruit World Class Instructors and Trainers. Implement a regular recruitment plan to ensure you find strong instructor talent. Organize Instructor training by implementing continuous improvement for you and your team. Ensure and maintain current certifications of instructors by providing effective in house training. Evaluate instructors a minimum of once per year via video. Perform quarterly quality control checks by attending classes on a random basis. Maintain the functional requirements of a well-organized studio- cleanliness, maintenance, ventilation etc. Plan for success. Create monthly department plans and manage all actions required to secure your overall goals. Lead your group fitness team and club mangers to understand the contributions Group Fitness can deliver and motivate them to support Group Fitness to provide greater success. Handle any employee related issue in line with club guidelines. Manage any member complaints in a fair and reasonable manner. Meet and greet all new members regardless of club interest. Create successful working relationships between all departments. Assist in outreach, member referrals, and promoting all departments. Act as Manger on Duty. Ensure that all club departments are working together and focused on hitting monthly goals. Drive Group Fitness Growth by developing and executing strategies that increase member participation, strengthen class attendance, and maintain a diverse, high-quality schedule that meets the needs of the Canton membership. Manage a Robust Group Fitness Schedule of 80+ classes per week across multiple formats and studios, ensuring appropriate programming variety, strong instructor coverage, and an effective balance of class offerings throughout the week. Maintain Consistent Schedule Coverage designed to meet member demand, with programming offered Monday-Friday from approximately 5:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from approximately 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Achieve and Maintain Key Performance Goals , including a Group Fitness penetration rate of 20% or greater and an average class attendance of 15+ participants, while continuously identifying opportunities to improve utilization and engagement. Measure and Analyze Performance by monitoring Group Fitness attendance, unique users, penetration, average attendance, class utilization, cancellations, cost per head, and other key performance indicators. Compare results against weekly, monthly, budgeted, and historical targets and implement action plans when performance falls below expectations. Optimize the Group Fitness Schedule by regularly evaluating class performance, member demand, attendance trends, instructor effectiveness, and programming opportunities. Make timely adjustments to class times, formats, and frequency to maximize participation and operational efficiency. Manage the Group Fitness Budget by monitoring instructor payroll, department expenses, cost per head, and overall program performance while maintaining a high-quality member experience. Recruit and Develop World-Class Instructors by maintaining an ongoing recruitment strategy, building a strong instructor pipeline, and proactively identifying talent needed to support current programming and future schedule growth. Plan and Host Group Fitness Auditions on a regular basis to identify, evaluate, and onboard high-quality instructors across a variety of formats while maintaining appropriate staffing depth and substitute coverage. Lead Instructor Training and Development by organizing continuing education opportunities, workshops, format trainings, team meetings, and in-house development sessions that promote continuous improvement and consistency across the Group Fitness program. Ensure Instructor Qualifications and Compliance by maintaining accurate records of required certifications, licenses, and continuing education and ensuring instructors remain current with all applicable requirements. Evaluate Instructor Performance through formal evaluations at least annually, ongoing coaching, member feedback, and quarterly quality-control class observations to maintain high standards for instruction, safety, engagement, and member experience. Maintain High-Quality Studio Environments by completing regular walkthroughs and partnering with appropriate departments to address cleanliness, equipment, maintenance, sound, temperature, ventilation, and other operational needs that impact the Group Fitness experience. Plan for Continued Success by developing monthly Group Fitness action plans, establishing measurable performance goals, and leading instructors and club leadership in understanding how Group Fitness contributes to member engagement, retention, and overall club success. Manage Instructor and Member Concerns promptly and professionally in accordance with club policies, including scheduling issues, performance concerns, employee relations matters, and member feedback related to Group Fitness. Build Cross-Departmental Partnerships that strengthen Group Fitness participation through new-member engagement, referrals, outreach, special events, member education, and collaboration with Fitness, Membership, Kids, Aquatics, and other club departments. Position Requirements Knowledge (Including Education, Training or Certifications) Skills & Abilities — maintains all applicable certifications and CEU requirements; AED and CPR certified, 1-2 year of management experience, Bachelors Degree preferred, competent in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. Must be able to maintain a work schedule during prime time hours and have flexibility with work schedules
