When that number is reached the posting will be automatically removed. Career Opportunity The city of Las Vegas is accepting applications for Sr. Recreation Leader . This position assists in the administration and operation of recreation facilities and programs, including a strong focus on executing business plans, budget, expenditures, purchasing, personnel, inventory, marketing, and other related items. Trains and leads assigned staff and volunteer staff. Addresses more complex or escalated customer service issues. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is dedicated to serving a vibrant and diverse community of participants. Verbal fluency in Spanish is desirable, but not required to be successful in the position. Type of Examination A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. Eligible List You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. Selection Process Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions. Example of Duties Distinguishing Characteristics Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned and the level of independence expected. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. Supervision Received and Exercised Receives general supervision from the assigned Recreation Coordinator or higher level supervisory or management staff. Acts as a lead worker, exercising functional or technical supervision, including scheduling and assigning tasks, providing direction and guidance to staff, ensuring work is completed according to proper procedure, monitoring work progress, and reviewing results. Essential Functions Coordinates, develops, implements and evaluates a variety of recreational and community-oriented programs, activities, trips and special events, including, but not limited to, sports and eSports (leagues, tournaments, competitions, gaming, etc.), multigenerational programs, camp, and out-of-school programs. Arranges schedules and facilities for activities. Ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards, safety rules and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly. Gathers information from various sources to identify needs and trends for new programs; drafts program outlines including the target participant group, description of the activity, estimate of staffing and equipment needs and any other costs, potential risks and plans to minimize them; submits plan to management for approval and upon approval, proceeds with implementation and follows up with evaluation. Coordinates and helps execute the development of facility/work unit business plans; develops performance metrics for use in making decisions related to the facility's business operations. Monitors facilities, sports fields, parks, trails, and/or recreational open spaces for function, safety and equipment issues; performs regular safety and health related inspections, cleaning, and maintenance services as needed; requests maintenance services as necessary. Enforces facility, department, and city policies, work rules and regulations. Provides direct assistance to programs, activities, trips and special events; coordinates with other facilities, work units and departments on programming as necessary. Evaluates activities, programs, trips and classes for content, techniques and staffing concerns; recommends and implements improvements or corrective actions. Enters and updates class and program information in the recreational software or other data-driven software system. Receives and responds to complex and sensitive issues. Handles inquiries and complaints from start through resolution in an efficient and timely manner. Supervise seasonal and hourly employees, instructors and volunteers; participates in recruiting and selecting job applicants; provides training, oversees work and conducts performance evaluations; approves and processes timecards; may make recommendations for terminations. Assists in monitoring and maintaining appropriate levels of supplies, equipment, and inventory to ensure efficient and effective operations. Prepares requisitions for purchasing supplies and equipment related to special programs and class work. Participates in the procurement process, including researching materials and equipment. Monitors program budgets and practices fiscal responsibility. Makes recommendations for recreation programs budgets and increased cost recovery. Coordinates and oversees various types of recreational programs, including but not limited to, adaptive/therapeutic recreation, sports and eSports (leagues, tournaments, competitions, etc.) and activities, trips and special events. Interprets and advises on rules and regulations. May mediate disputes during competitions. Assists with marketing research, promotional materials and displays. Maintains documentation on all programs and participants; prepares statistical and summary reports as needed. Oversees front desk operations and provides assistance as needed. When assigned to camps in an Aquatic environment, staff may work with Aquatic staff. Marginal Functions Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, and other general clerical work. Attends and participates in professional group meetings. Stays abreast of new trends, programs and innovations in the field of recreation programming. Assists with opening and closing facilities and setting up and taking down equipment and supplies as necessary, ensuring that safety equipment is in good working order and easily accessible. Provides instruction for and runs classes, activities, sports, eSports clinics, camps and programs as needed. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; implements policies and procedures. Participates in the review and development of department policies, procedures, work rules, and regulations as necessary; may assist with the facilitation of applicable staff training. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. Minimum Requirements Experience/Training Associate's or higher degree in a related field

  • including internships, work study or volunteer, OR Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of full-time experience working in recreation or a related field
  • , OR Equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years (full-time) of customer service experience that involved regular public contact, clerical work, cashiering, or parks & recreation experience.
In the above criteria, related field may include, but is not limited to, general education, sociology, gerontology, psychology, parks & recreation, leisure studies, sports management, kinesiology, business management, and public, business or recreation administration. License or Certificate Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. Possession of First Aid/CPR/AED certificate is required on date of hire, and maintenance thereafter. Special Requirements Fluency in Spanish is desirable. Retirement Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after)for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the city's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS. Deferred Compensation The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options. Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental, and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium + 50% of dependent premium. Life and AD&D Insurance City provides $20,000 insurance at no cost.
