PURPOSE:
To identify the function, required skills and competencies, education and job responsibilities for a Lead Pharmacy Technician Compounding.
POLICY:
Primary Function A Pharmacy Technician Compounding shall work under the direction of the Pharmacist to promote and maintain good interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships. A Pharmacy Technician Compounding shall master various pharmacy responsibilities in order to assist in managing and training Pharmacy Technicians. The Pharmacy Technician Compounding shall be trained in multiple functions within the scope of their job description. It is the responsibility of the Pharmacist-in-Charge to ensure that the Pharmacy Technician Compounding maintain adequate skill levels for each of these functions through ongoing supervision, mentoring, monitoring and evaluation of practice based operational activities.
PROCEDURE
The Lead Pharmacy Technician Compounding reports to: Pharmacist-in-Charge (or Staff Pharmacist on duty if the PIC is unavailable), or the Lead Pharmacy Technician Compounding Requirements Must be flexible and be able to work different schedules to meet client and pharmacy needs. Possess detailed knowledge of prescription drugs and laws governing prescription drugs. Demonstrate competent working knowledge of participating third party insurance plans. Possess thorough knowledge of the Certified Pharmacy Technician duties and scopes of responsibility. Be able to work in fast-paced environment. Possess ability to troubleshoot and solve problems. Demonstrate strong verbal and written communications skills. Must be organized and be able to prioritize tasks. PC knowledge and general navigation. Operate in a manner consistent with professional, ethical, and legal standards of proper pharmacy practice. Compounding Specific Requirements Weigh ingredients correctly and process them following the provided formula worksheet specifications Ensure correct formula preparation according to the prescription following quality assurance guidelines Make sure the pharmacist on duty has confirmed the formulation in accordance to the script before starting compounding preparation Ensure compounds are prepared in accordance to formulation and that all relevant compounding guidelines and quality standards are maintained Weigh and measure suitable chemicals to prepare different kinds of compounds including suspensions, creams, solutions, ointments, capsules, and suppositories Package and label prepared compounds in suitable dispensing tool Place and confirm that the beyond use date on the patient's product label is correct Send prepared compound and documentation to supervising pharmacist for verification and sign off Execute quality assurance procedures on assigned randomly sampled scripts and document results following standards Responsible for daily cleaning and logs in accordance to established policy Perform daily confirmation that all equipment are working well, including capsule machines, counters, and cleaning balances Ensure all equipment, including freezer/fridge temperatures and weights on scales at work station are verified and maintained every morning Ensure that all relevant steps in each compound are verified with the supervising pharmacist Take part in departmental meetings, as well as in relevant educational programs May be asked to handle special projects as well as perform other duties that may be assigned. Typical Duties Fill new medications orders, refills and renewals for Medpoint Pharmacy clients. Credit client medications that are not picked up within 10 days. Restock pharmacy shelves when medications are received from the wholesaler. Check for outdated medications on monthly basis (30 days). Prepares prescriptions for the pharmacist to check. Prepare any packages that will be delivered to patients. Make recommendations to the pharmacist regarding methods and or procedures that can be improved. Help others whenever and wherever there is a backlog. Be accurate, proficient, timely, knowledgeable, thorough and complete in one's work. Willingness to learn new responsibilities and tasks. Participate in weekly pharmacy operations meeting. May provide direct supervision to Pharmacy Technicians, Interns, Students, or Delivery Drivers. Qualifications and Licenses Two years and more experience working as a pharmacy technician. Experience in a non-sterile compounding environment preferred. State licensed Pharmacy Technician in good standing Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) High school diploma Strong knowledge of and standards and all relevant USP compounding guidelines. Ability to work according to all USP compounding standards. Knowledge of State laws regulating pharmaceutical compounding practice Strong knowledge of product preparation, compounding, packaging and labeling as well as quality assurance standards High proficiency in computer usage Effective oral and verbal communication, with co-staff, pharmacists, and the public Strong ability to perform optimally in a team setting Ability to excel performing multiple tasks at the same time without making errors Work Conditions Appreciable standing or walking about is required. Manual dexterity is required for sustained periods.
