Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist supports a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and maintaining the integrity of all specimens. This role also assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement while delivering courteous and professional service to patients and healthcare staff. Responsibilities Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols. Package specimens for transport, ensuring that all samples are placed in appropriate collection containers or tubes and stored at required temperatures. Follow detailed procedures for specimen handling and transport to maintain the integrity and stability of each sample. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and safe laboratory environment. Update and maintain accurate patient information and test data using appropriate systems and tools, including data entry in Microsoft Office applications. Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct test processing and specimen handling. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory standards. Attend and complete annual department trainings to stay current with procedures, safety standards, and best practices. Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in accordance with established policies. Assist with troubleshooting routine issues, participate in training activities, and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency. Essential Skills Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. 2-4 years of overall experience in phlebotomy, healthcare, or a closely related environment. Proven proficiency in performing blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles. Demonstrated experience in specimen collection, labeling, centrifugation, processing, and storage. Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify orders. Strong data entry skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and reporting tasks. High School Diploma or GED. Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and standard safety practices in a clinical or laboratory environment. Effective verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to inquiries. Customer service skills to interact professionally and courteously with patients and healthcare staff. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced healthcare or laboratory setting. Familiarity with general healthcare workflows and laboratory operations. Ability to read and fully understand physicians' orders and follow detailed protocols. Comfort handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously. Ability to participate in training and share best practices with colleagues. Problem-solving skills to assist with troubleshooting routine specimen or workflow issues. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that focuses on efficient and accurate specimen collection and processing. You will frequently interact with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff while performing blood draws and handling various specimen types. The position requires consistent adherence to safety protocols, including OSHA and DEP regulations, and involves regular use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen transport containers. Work typically involves standing for extended periods, moving between collection areas and the lab, and using computers and Microsoft Office applications for data entry and documentation. Professional, clean, and appropriate clinical attire is expected to maintain a safe, hygienic, and respectful environment for patients and colleagues. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winston-Salem, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
