Job Title:
Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This position focuses on accurate specimen collection, labeling, processing, and data entry while providing courteous, clear communication to patients and collaborating closely with clinical staff in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care. Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established laboratory procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocol. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to confirm that the correct tests are performed. Package specimens for transport, following required procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transit. Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each type of test. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a clean and safe laboratory environment. Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and logs to maintain complete and current records. Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results when appropriate to satisfy inquiries in accordance with lab guidelines. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, maintaining strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards. Attend annual department trainings and stay current with updates to procedures, regulations, and best practices. Contribute to workflow improvement by identifying routine issues, suggesting process enhancements, and supporting training efforts for colleagues. Provide excellent customer service to patients and clinical staff, ensuring a positive and efficient experience during specimen collection. Work consistently in a non-float capacity at the assigned location and schedule, providing reliable coverage for the laboratory. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles. Ability to accurately collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols. Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders. Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with safety and regulatory requirements. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication tasks. Effective verbal communication skills to clearly explain specimen collection procedures to patients and respond to telephone inquiries. High School Diploma orGED. 2-4
years of overall work experience, including experience in a healthcare or laboratory environment. Ability to provide professional customer service in interactions with patients and clinical staff. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working specifically in a hospital or high-volume laboratory setting. Demonstrated ability to work efficiently during limited, high-demand hours. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimen types and test orders accurately. Comfort with reading and conveying laboratory results over the phone in line with lab policies. Ability to participate in and benefit from ongoing departmental training and process improvement initiatives. Color vision screening capability to accurately distinguish labels and specimen indicators. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Amsterdam, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.80 - $22.24/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
