Ghost RX Position Summary Ghost RX is seeking an experienced Phlebotomist to provide laboratory support services at the Memphis VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. The Phlebotomist will be responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients, ensuring proper specimen identification and handling, and supporting laboratory operations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in venipuncture, capillary collection, infection control, and patient care in a clinical or hospital setting. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients in accordance with established procedures. Collect blood specimens from outpatient and inpatient populations, including geriatric patients. Verify patient identity using two approved identifiers before specimen collection. Properly label, process, and prepare specimens for laboratory testing. Ensure specimens are collected in the appropriate tubes and containers and transported according to laboratory requirements. Follow established order of draw, specimen handling, and infection control procedures. Enter and verify laboratory orders and specimen information in VA-approved electronic health record and laboratory systems. Maintain accurate documentation of specimen collection, including collection times and patient information. Identify and report specimen collection issues, including hemolysis, insufficient quantities, and improperly labeled specimens. Monitor and maintain phlebotomy supplies and equipment. Follow OSHA standards, universal precautions, and bloodborne pathogen safety protocols. Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Provide compassionate and professional patient care, particularly when working with elderly Veterans and patients with difficult venous access. Communicate effectively with laboratory personnel, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare staff. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program preferred. Minimum of one year of recent phlebotomy experience in a clinical, hospital, or laboratory setting preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary specimen collection. Knowledge of proper specimen collection, labeling, processing, and transportation procedures. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory testing procedures. Understanding of infection control, OSHA regulations, and bloodborne pathogen precautions. Ability to work independently and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Strong communication and patient care skills. Preferred Qualifications National phlebotomy certification through ASCP, NHA, AMT, or an equivalent recognized organization. Previous experience working at a VA Medical Center or federal healthcare facility. Experience collecting specimens from geriatric patients and patients with difficult venous access. Experience in both inpatient and outpatient laboratory settings. Familiarity with VA electronic health record systems, including VistA/CPRS. Experience with specimen processing, centrifugation, and laboratory information systems.
