Job Description

The Phlebotomist is responsible for the accurate and timely collection and processing of specimens obtained for diagnostic testing and additionally performs the following duties: Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures to collect specimens for laboratory analysis. Serves patients of all ages from newborn through geriatric with varying cultural backgrounds and disposition. Performs clerical functions such as filing, word processing, answering the telephone, faxing results, and preparing specimens to be sent to the hospital lab. Assists with other duties as needed and assigned. May be trained to perform waived testing clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance in defined areas of the clinical laboratory.

These disciplines include urinalysis, serology, and phlebotomy. May be asked to assist with cleaning exam rooms between patients, rooming patients or providing coverage for patient access rep.
Essential functions:
Interprets lab orders and collects laboratory samples based on written or electronic provider orders. Performs phlebotomy, and laboratory procedures (if assigned), with accuracy and utilization of safe techniques. Performs clerical skills as necessary, including answering phone, transcription of orders, and maintenance of assigned laboratory records. Accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical staff-related, and patient-related data and information. Ensures appropriate supply inventory and equipment to meet provider and patient needs, including rotating stock, evaluating expiration dates, and reviewing availability of SDS documentation. Transfer of lab specimens, and supplies to and from the hospital, if needed. Actively and willingly takes on additional projects within the Lab, Clinic, or Hospital. Continues to update skills by utilizing continuing education opportunities. Completes required hospital-wide education and job-specific competencies. Completes hospital performance review annually. Utilizes department resources in an effective and efficient manner. Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Administrative Director to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
Required Education:
Certified Phlebotomy Technician.
Preferred Education:
Certified Phlebotomy Technician. Certification as a Phlebotomist by a national accrediting agency.
Required Experience:
On the job training includes competency verification by observation of skills and test performance.
Preferred Experience:
Phlebotomy experience in a health care setting. Any medical related class work, such as CNA or Medical Assistant training; clerical or clinical experience in a health care setting.
CERTIFICATIONS
Phlebotomy certification through a national accrediting agency. BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
