Job Description
The Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (PA) is an integral member of the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery team and works collaboratively with trauma and acute care surgeons to provide comprehensive, high-quality care to critically injured, acutely ill, and surgical patients. Responsibilities will include providing care across the continuum, including the Emergency Department, trauma bays, inpatient units, Intensive Care Units (ICUs), operating rooms, and outpatient Trauma/Acute Care Surgery clinics. Responsibilities include evaluation and management of both Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (ACS) patients, participation in resuscitation and surgical care, coordination of inpatient and outpatient treatment plans, and facilitation of safe transitions of care. The selected candidate is expected to practice within his/her scope of practice, hospital policies, established clinical protocols, and applicable regulatory requirements while functioning as an active member of the multidisciplinary Trauma and Acute Care Surgery team. Key Responsibilities
- Respond to trauma alerts and participate in patient evaluation, resuscitation, stabilization, and ongoing management.
- Perform histories, physical exams, assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, orders, and clinical documentation.
- Manage Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (ACS) patients across inpatient, ICU, ED, and consult services.
- Participate in daily rounds, monitor clinical progress, review labs/imaging, and communicate changes to attending surgeons.
- Assist surgeons during emergencies and scheduled procedures as credentialed and privileged.
- Evaluate ED and inpatient surgical consultations and coordinate diagnostic testing, treatment, and disposition.
- Provide preoperative and postoperative care and identify complications or need for escalation.
- Coordinate discharges, medication reconciliation, follow-up, patient education, and transitions of care.
- Provide outpatient trauma/ACS follow-up, postoperative care, wound management, and routine surgical care.
- Perform procedures within scope, competency, and privileges, including airway assistance, chest tube/pigtail placement, wound/laceration repair, drain management, VAC therapy, and suture/staple removal.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing, case management, rehabilitation, consultants, and other multidisciplinary team members.
- Maintain timely, accurate documentation and participate in quality improvement, patient safety, education, case reviews, and departmental activities.
- Maintain required certifications, competencies, credentialing, and privileges. Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program; Masters degree as required.
- Current NCCPA certification.
- Current, unrestricted Florida PA license.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- ATLS certification or completion within the departments required timeframe, if applicable.
- Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, or surgical experience preferred.
- Strong clinical judgment with the ability to manage high-acuity patients, recognize deterioration, prioritize demands, and work effectively under pressure.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, documentation, and patient/family education skills.
