Physician Assistant (PA-C) Cardiothoracic Surgery PA Opportunity A well-established hospital-based Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery program in New Jersey is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join its surgical team. This is a hands-on cardiac surgery position with responsibilities spanning the operating room, surgical ICU, and inpatient cardiac/vascular floors . The incoming PA will work directly with cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, APPs, nursing, and other members of the cardiovascular team. Endoscopic Vein Harvest (EVH) experience is a major priority. Candidates should be comfortable independently performing EVH with minimal additional training. What You'll Do Independently perform Endoscopic Vein Harvest (EVH) First assist on cardiac and vascular surgical procedures Provide perioperative and postoperative management of cardiothoracic surgery patients Round on cardiac and vascular surgery patients Provide coverage within the surgical ICU and inpatient units Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop treatment plans Manage postoperative patients in collaboration with surgeons and intensivists Perform and/or assist with bedside procedures based on experience Educate patients and families throughout the surgical care continuum Collaborate closely with surgeons, APPs, nursing, anesthesia, critical care, and other specialties Schedule The program offers a structured full-time schedule with flexibility depending on current staffing.
Standard schedule may include:
Three 12-hour shifts per week , or Four 10-hour shifts per week Day/night rotation Approximately two weekend 24-hour shifts per month During periods of reduced staffing, the team may temporarily utilize a 24-hour coverage model. No traditional home call. When covering nights or weekends, the scheduled APP is already onsite and serves as the designated call provider. Required Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program NCCPA Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) Active or eligible for an unrestricted New Jersey Physician Assistant license DEA registration Current ACLS certification At least 1 year of cardiac or vascular surgery first-assist experience and/or surgical critical care experience Ability to work effectively within a high-acuity cardiovascular surgery environment Highly Desired Experience Strong candidates will have experience with: Endoscopic Vein Harvest (EVH) Open vein harvest Cardiothoracic surgical first assist Vascular surgical first assist Chest tube placement Arterial line placement Central venous catheter placement Foley and NG tube placement Postoperative cardiac surgery management Surgical or cardiovascular critical care Experience managing or working with the following is also valuable: Pulmonary artery catheters Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) Impella devices Other mechanical circulatory support patients Ideal Candidate This position is particularly well suited for an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgery PA, Cardiovascular Surgery PA, or Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant who enjoys maintaining a broad clinical skill set across the OR, ICU, and inpatient setting.
