Job Description

Position Overview We are seeking a motivated and highly skilled Physician Assistant to join our orthopedic team in a unique role designed primarily around surgical assisting and procedural care. Unlike a traditional office-based PA position, this role will spend the majority of the workweek in the operating room assisting our orthopedic surgeons or performing approved procedures independently. The anticipated weekly schedule will generally consist of:
  • Approximately 4 days per week in the operating room, assisting our orthopedic surgeons with surgical cases.
  • Approximately 1 day per week dedicated to procedures, with the Physician Assistant performing procedures independently within their training, credentialing, and scope of practice.
  • Office/clinic responsibilities will be secondary.
The PA will primarily see patients in the office only on days when there are no surgical cases or scheduled procedures requiring their involvement. This is an excellent opportunity for a Physician Assistant who enjoys a hands-on, procedural environment and wants to spend significantly more time in surgery than in a traditional orthopedic clinic setting. Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as first assist for orthopedic surgical procedures.
  • Work closely with surgeons and operating room staff throughout the surgical day.
  • Assist with preoperative preparation and postoperative management related to surgical patients.
  • Independently perform approved office-based or procedural services based upon training, credentialing, and physician delegation.
  • Evaluate and manage patients associated with procedural and surgical care.
  • Provide appropriate documentation for surgical and procedural encounters.
  • Communicate with physicians, clinical staff, patients, and other members of the care team to coordinate treatment.
  • Provide postoperative patient care and follow-up as necessary.
  • Participate in office clinic and evaluate orthopedic patients when surgical or procedural responsibilities are not scheduled.
  • Order and review appropriate diagnostic testing and imaging within scope of practice.
  • Assist with injections, regenerative procedures, and other orthopedic procedures based upon experience, training, and credentialing.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records.
  • Follow all organizational policies, clinical protocols, and applicable state and federal requirements. Ideal Candidate
  • Strongly prefers surgical and procedural medicine over a primarily clinic-based position.
  • Enjoys spending the majority of the workweek in the operating room.
  • Is comfortable working independently while maintaining close collaboration with orthopedic surgeons.
  • Is highly organized and able to adapt to changing surgical schedules.
  • Has strong procedural and technical skills.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and families.
  • Is dependable, team-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced orthopedic environment.
  • Is interested in continuing to develop advanced orthopedic and procedural skills. Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current or eligible Pennsylvania Physician Assistant license.
  • NCCPA certification.
  • Current DEA registration or ability to obtain, if required for assigned responsibilities.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
  • Orthopedic and/or surgical experience preferred.
  • Operating room and first-assist experience strongly preferred.
  • New graduates with significant orthopedic or surgical training may also be considered.
Schedule This is a full-time, five-day-per-week position structured around the surgical and procedural needs of the practice. Because surgical schedules may vary, flexibility regarding which days are designated as OR, procedural, or clinic days is important. 4 Days - Operating Room / Surgical First Assist Work alongside our orthopedic surgeons and assist with scheduled surgical cases. 1 Day - Independent Procedures Perform designated procedures independently within the PA's training, credentialing, and scope of practice. Clinic Coverage as Needed If there are no surgeries or procedures scheduled that require the PA, the PA will work in the orthopedic office evaluating and treating patients. Why This Position Is Different This position was specifically designed for a Physician Assistant who wants to be actively involved in surgery and procedures. Rather than spending four or five days each week seeing patients in clinic, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to make the operating room and procedural care the primary focus of their position. If you are a Physician Assistant who enjoys orthopedic surgery, working directly with surgeons, performing procedures, and being an integral part of the surgical team, we would like to hear from you.
