Job Description

OPD Orthopedics A Brief Overview Applies technical and operational knowledge to support nursing/medical staff by performing various orthopedic activities. Applies and removes casts, splints and dressing as well as traction/orthopedic equipment, devices and supplies as required What you will do Performs and/or assists with the application, adjustment and removal of casts, splints and traction/orthopedic devices as ordered by medical staff.
  • Communicates to appropriate staff regarding activities, needs and problems. Follows up with medical/nursing staff as required.
  • Work performed evidences completion of tasks as shown in patient outcomes, documentation and/or completed work.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide orthopedic care, maintains competency and meets age-specific patient needs in a caring, compassionate, and sensitive manner.
Provides instructions to patient for proper care of cast, brace, crutches or other devices. Lifts, transports, and positions patients utilizing proper technique and equipment. Transports charts, equipment and supplies to and from various areas. Makes rounds within clinical units to ensure that orthopedic equipment is in the proper working condition. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and utilizes supplies in a cost-effective manner.
  • Inventories supplies daily and assists with care, preparation and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies.
  • Requisitions, receives, and maintains appropriate inventory of equipment, and supplies.
  • Removes, cleans and stores after use, all orthopedic equipment and supplies.
  • Assists with cleaning, restocking patient care and supply areas/rooms (includes supplies, equipment, beds).
  • Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor or applicable service representative.
Interacts and communicates in a customer responsiveness and courteous manner in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction. Works collaboratively with medical/hospital staff and patients to coordinate and implement patient care activities. Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes. Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data. Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies). Participates in in-services and training with medical and nursing personnel in operation and care of orthopedic equipment and devises. Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Attends staff meetings, all mandatory in-service and additional continuing education as required. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve care. Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement, patient safety, environment and infection control standards. Provides coverage for relief and absences as required. Provides on-call coverage during weekend and off shifts. Qualifications High School Graduate or equivalent Required and Completion of an Orthopedic Technician training program Preferred and Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates.
