Nurse Practitioner Nurse Practitioner Serves as a healthcare provider to Missoula Bone & Joint and Surgery Center patients primarily in an outpatient setting. Outpatient clinical responsibilities include evaluation and management of patients, Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) evaluation of patients in preparation for surgery, and discharge process for same day patients. 1. Communication and Teamwork Expected to be a positive and responsible team member with a good attitude Presents good oral and written communication (documentation) skills Safety/Risk Management Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities Maintains responsibility for safe work area by reporting observed or suspected safety violations, hazards, and policy/procedure noncompliance Responds to emergency situations with competence and composure Reports observed or suspected medical emergencies, notifies appropriate personnel, and responds appropriately Professional competence Participates in continuing education and other learning experiences Shares knowledge gained in continuing education with staff Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities Welcomes suggestions and recommendations Maintains current CPR certification Analyzes work area and makes recommendations for potential cost-effective improvements Nurse Practitioner duties Performs history, physical examination, and careful chart review of patients having a planned outpatient surgical procedure including evaluation of the pre-existing medical record, collation and/or ordering of needed lab studies and other tests, and a final assessment of the medical state and overall fitness for the planned procedure to be relayed to the anesthesia team and the primary surgeon Participates in the preparation of patients for surgery by coordinating care, testing, education, and support for surgical patients during a patient appointment Assessing and documenting the patient's medical history Integrating clinical findings of the history and physical with accurate clinical knowledge to adequately screen the patient for the procedure and anesthesia modalities Works with pre-admission RNs to identify and personally consult on patients at higher risk of adverse events from the planned operation or anesthetic Orders diagnostic tests pertinent to the clinical situation and standard Pre-Admission Evaluation guidelines: Interprets the results of tests, as a component of the perioperative evaluation including but not limited to: discovery or identification of a disorder or disease which may affect anesthetic safety. Verifies an already known disease, disorder, or medical condition or alternative therapy which may affect anesthetic care. Communicates medical assessment with the attending surgeon and anesthesia provider Consults with other healthcare providers i.e. PCP, cardiology, and/or pulmonology Consults with the anesthesia provider and the surgeon concerning recommendations for rescheduling or canceling the surgical procedure Communicates with referring or primary care provider regarding patient care and treatment Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic modalities to accomplish the plan of treatment Provides patient education to patients and their families about the planned procedure, the experience of both outpatient or home-based convalescence and recovery, and provides counseling on clinical protocols such as enhanced recovery paradigms and narcotic-sparing multimodal analgesia Maintains patient confidentiality. Responds to medical emergencies, including use of CPR Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines (OSHA) Compliance with patient confidentiality (HIPAA) and Red Flag Rules Other duties as assigned Qualifications Cooperative work attitude toward co-employees, management, patients, visitors, anesthesiologists, and physicians Ability to promote favorable facility image with physicians, patients, hospitals, other physician offices, and general public Ability to make decisions and solve problems Work effectively as team member with physicians and other staff Appropriately interact with patients, families, and others Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands Must have a flexible work schedule with the ability to work early/late as needed Requirements Current Montana NP license (ability to obtain) Current DEA registration and Controlled Substance Registration certificate required Graduate of an Accredited Nurse Practitioner School Certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANP) required At least one (1) year, and preferably three (3), of internal medicine experience required. Preference will be given to candidates with a history of experience in a perioperative medicine/PAE/PAT/OR or Orthopedic setting Candidate is required to have previous experience in medical and perioperative risk stratification and the ability to develop evidence-based strategies to optimize patient's condition and minimize the risk of adverse peri-op events Current BLS certification required Good communication skills Good computer skills Strong ethical and moral character references Job quality requirements Accuracy Attention to detail Timeliness Organization Little supervision needed to accomplish tasks Ability to multi task Appropriate assessment and assistance techniques Appropriate use of universal precautions, safe workplace and confidentiality methods.
