Job Summary:

Performs and is responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation for diagnostic purposes. Independently perform or assist the licensed practitioner in the completion of radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures. Prepare, administer and document activities related to medications and radiation exposure in accordance with federal and state laws, regulations or lawful institutional policy.

Essential Job Duties:

Adapts to changing environment, i.e., staffing patterns and assignments. Adheres to attendance and dependability standards and uses hospital time conscientiously. Promotes and maintains a positive image of the department and hospital. Perform routine x-ray exams using proper positioning and technique selection. Maintains an awareness of radiation protection and safety at all times. Uses personnel radiation monitoring device(s) as indicated by the radiation safety officer or designee. Verifies patient identification. Verifies the patient's pregnancy status. Assesses factors that may affect the procedure. Obtains and reviews relevant previous procedures and information from all available resources and the release of information as needed Determines that services are performed in a safe environment, minimizing potential hazards. Verifies appropriateness of the requested or prescribed procedure, in compliance with the clinical indication and protocol Participates in ALARA, patient and personnel safety, risk management and quality management activities. Determines the need for and selects supplies, accessory equipment, shielding, positioning and immobilization devices. Analyzes images to determine the use of appropriate imaging parameters. Uses appropriate uniquely identifiable pre-exposure radiopaque markers for anatomical and procedural purposes. Uses pre-exposure collimation and proper field-of-view selection. Evaluates images for optimal demonstration of anatomy of interest. Performs C.T. examinations. Assesses patient lab values, medication list and risk for allergic reaction(s) prior to procedure and administration of contrast media. Determines the appropriate type and dose of contrast media to be administered based on established protocols Administers contrast media and other medications only when a licensed practitioner is immediately available to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment of adverse events. Monitors the patient for reactions to medications. Consults appropriate medical personnel to determine a modified action plan. Recognizes signs and symptoms of an emergency. Schedule imaging procedures. Maintains a clean work environment. Employs professional judgment to adapt procedures to improve diagnostic quality or therapeutic outcomes. Selects the most appropriate and efficient action plan after reviewing all pertinent data and assessing the patient's abilities and condition. Provides accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time and at a level the patient and their care providers can understand; addresses questions and concerns regarding the procedure. Evaluates the patient, equipment and procedure to identify variances that might affect the expected outcome. Archives images or data. Documents diagnostic, treatment and patient data in the medical record in a timely, accurate and comprehensive manner. Documents the use of shielding devices and proper radiation safety practices. Adheres to standards, policies, statutes, regulations and established guidelines. Anticipates, considers and responds to the needs of a diverse patient population. Applies professional judgment and discretion while performing the procedure.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Qualifications:

Completion of accredited Radiologic Technology program. Must have met and passed the examination criteria as determined by the ARRT. Those passing the ARRT radiography examination use the credential R.T.(R). Maintains credentials and certification related to practice. Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty as appropriate. Maintains knowledge of the most current practices and technology used to minimize patient dose while producing diagnostic quality images. Current CPR. Maintains a high degree of credibility, independence, integrity, confidentiality and trust. Strong communication and leadership skills. Maintains knowledge of the most current practices and technology. Uses an integrated team approach. Employs professional judgment and discretion. Strong work ethic, behavior and attitude. Elicits confidence and cooperation from the patient, the public and other health care providers by providing timely communication and effective instruction. Must be able to stand and traverse 50% of the time. Constantly operates a computer or other machinery. Frequently position self to provide patient care and lifting up to 50 lbs. to a height of 3-4 feet as well as traverse inside the hospital.
