A Recreational Therapist directs and coordinates recreational activities for people with disabilities or illness to help them improve their emotional and physical well-being, improve motor skills and increase confidence. Leads activities involving movement, sports, games, and other activities for brain stimulation. Assists patients with disabilities to learn to use public resources such as parks and public transportation, and integrate in the community. Works with people of all ages, in schools, nursing homes, clinics and other healthcare facilities, or in parks and recreation departments.

At Jefferson House we provide excellent long-term care and rehabilitation services to seniors in the greater Hartford area for over 120 years. We are comprised of a skilled and caring staff which provides seniors with Nursing Services, Therapeutic Recreation, Spiritual Services, and Social Services, aimed at caring for the whole individual. Provides Therapeutic Recreation Services to assigned patient caseload that includes evaluation of leisure function and treatment consistent with treatment team goals. Independently evaluates patients, determines treatment approach to be used to identify deficits, and restore and remediate patient's leisure function to maximum independence. Treatment techniques are used to enhance overall leisure functional performance. This position reports to Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator and unit program manager. Qualifications BA or BS Degree in Therapeutic Recreation Services or related field. No experience necessary. Current National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) or eligibility to sit for the next NCTRC examination. New hires are permitted to take the examination twice. Employed staff must maintain annual certification. If a lapse occurs, must re-certify within 6 months to retain their position. Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate required in Units/Programs that utilize aquatic programming. CT Public Passenger Driver's License required in Units/Programs that utilize community-based programming. Ability to facilitate therapeutic groups. Demonstrated age-specific competency for assigned population(s). We take great care of careers.
