A Recreational Therapist directs and coordinates recreational activities for people with disabilities or illness to help them improve their emotional and physical well-being, improve motor skills and increase confidence. Leads activities involving movement, sports, games, and other activities for brain stimulation. Assists patients with disabilities to learn to use public resources such as parks and public transportation, and integrate in the community. Works with people of all ages, in schools, nursing homes, clinics and other healthcare facilities, or in parks and recreation departments.

Job Description

Under general supervision of the Therapeutic Supervisor, assists with the planning, coordinating and implementation of community-based leisure, social and recreational programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. Reports to the Therapeutic Supervisor.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists with planning and implementing monthly social events for individuals with developmental disabilities. Develops and promotes positive working relationships with guardians/ parents of participants and group home staff. Receipts payments for program fees. Assists with planning and implementing Local Special Olympic events & corresponds with vendors to ensure quality events. Recruits and trains volunteers. Coaches athletes in a variety of sports; oversees athletes on weekend trips to ensure safety Assists athletes with financial transactions and medications. Works as camp counselor in summer camp for individuals with developmental disabilities. Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation such as newsletters, registration forms, membership forms, event evaluations, flyers and email. Assists with vehicle and facility maintenance. Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment and machinery including a 15 passenger van, automobile, sound system, copy machine, kitchen equipment, computer, etc. Provides a positive, supporting atmosphere during all Therapeutic Programs; Encourages participant involvement in recreation opportunities.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma, GED or current enrollment in high school Applicant must be 16 years of age or older Must possess a valid Georgia State Driver's license and/or have reliable transportation to any assigned site in Lowndes County A successful applicant will be passionate and have an experience and knowledge with special needs individuals Knowledge of the sport is preferable Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority is a drug-free workplace. A pre-employment drug screen, criminal history background investigation, and a Motor Vehicle Report will be conducted.
