A Recreational Therapist directs and coordinates recreational activities for people with disabilities or illness to help them improve their emotional and physical well-being, improve motor skills and increase confidence. Leads activities involving movement, sports, games, and other activities for brain stimulation. Assists patients with disabilities to learn to use public resources such as parks and public transportation, and integrate in the community. Works with people of all ages, in schools, nursing homes, clinics and other healthcare facilities, or in parks and recreation departments.

General Summary/Responsibilities:
The Rehabilitation Specialist/Therapist is responsible for establishing, coordinating, organizing, and implementing a balanced rehabilitation therapy program based on the specific ages, needs, and treatment issues of the patients served. Responsible to make professional decisions to ensure patient safety during rehabilitation therapy and experiential therapy groups. Includes knowledge of, and proper use and maintenance of, rehabilitation and experiential equipment and the purchasing of supplies. Also, responsible to maintain knowledge of current inventory and professional trends and to maintain national level professional certification or state level registration.
Qualifications Education Minimum Level of Education Required:
Associate degree Type of degree: Associates, Bachelor's or Master's Area of study or major: Occupational therapy, Recreational therapy, Art therapy, Expressive therapy, or Rehabilitation Preferred educational qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's Licensure/Certification/Registration Licensure, certification, or registration in area of specialty by a recognized state or local body. Current healthcare provider CPR certification required. NVCI certification required within the first 90 days of hire.
CTRS REQUIRED UPON HIRE OR OT
Experience Minimum Level of Experience Required:
No prior job-related work experience Preferred experience: 1-3 years in area of expertise Knowledge/Skills General knowledge of human behaviors, abnormal and developmental psychology. Must be knowledgeable regarding care of mental health patients and work collaboratively with others. Must demonstrate competency in listed major duties and responsibilities of job description.
