Detention Nurse (Part-Time)
Job Description
Employees working in this position are responsible for providing nursing services to the residents of the Neaves-Davis Center, a secure juvenile detention center, in accordance to the standards of the nursing profession. Nurses in this position perform duties with a considerable degree of independent judgment and initiative, but within the guidelines of current nursing standards. The nurses perform their duties under the supervision of the facility's Licensed Director, the Chief Probation Officer, and the Director of Detention. (All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.) Holds sick call and examines patients to determine their need for medical care. Assists the Licensed Director with physical examinations involving techniques such as: removal of warts, lancing of boils, or the removal of damaged fingernails and toenails, removal of suturing, and other task as needed. Under the direction of the Licensed Director, prepares, carries out, evaluates, and revises treatment plans for individual patients based on personal observations and recommendations of the Licensed Medical Provider. Under the Licensed Physician, treats minor ailments such as headaches, stomachaches, colds, influenza, cuts and scratches; performs eye and ear irrigations; applies surgical dressings and bandages; gives first aid. Records and administers or oversees the administration of medications such as tranquilizers, anti-seizure medications, immunizations, vitamins, antibiotics in several ways such as; topically, orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously and intravenously as directed by a licensed Physician; assures that patient and medication records are properly posted and maintained. Observes and records the physical and mental condition of patients noting physical and/or behavioral changes and the effects of drugs. Takes and records blood pressure, pulse rate and body temperature of patients; evaluates physical and mental conditions of patients to determine whether they require the attention of a Licensed Physician. Takes samples of blood, urine, sputum, feces, gastric contents, gynecological cultures for laboratory tests; instructs patients on giving sputum, urine, and other specimens. Cares for and counsels ill, injured or infirm patients; provides for the safety, comfort and protection of patients; responds to patients' needs, encourages healthy mental attitudes and new behavior patterns. Sterilizes medical supplies, establishes security measures to prevent loss or theft of drugs and supplies; requisitions supplies; delivers and distributes supplies. Ability to work various shifts. Performs other related duties as required. Education and Experience Completion of the requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) as approved by the State of Alabama Board of Nursing. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Ability to prepare and maintain physical and medical records. Ability to provide medical services as prescribed by a physician. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing. Ability to assess the physical complaints of children and to make sound judgments as to the need for further medical examination and treatment by a physician. Ability to obtain medial history information, to assess that information and to provide instructions for follow-up when appropriate. Physical Requirements Must be able to communicate effectively. The person in this position frequently communicates in person and on the telephone. Needs to be able to operate office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinet, office machinery, etc. Certifications or Licenses Required Requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the State of Alabama Board of Nursing. Preferred Skills/Desired Skills Ability to work in a secure detention facility and treat juveniles charged with or found delinquent. Knowledge of mental growth and development. Psychiatric nursing techniques and theories and techniques involved in nursing the mentally ill. Mental health concepts and available community resources.
