Job Description Title:
Half-Time School Nurse (.5) with Benefits Pay scale: Based on NBTA Contract (Includes Benefits)
Description:
The school nurse provides immediate general first aid to the students, staff, and visitors at the school. They review immunization and physical exam records and arrange school physicals for students as required by school policy for those who do not choose to be examined by a private physician. They provide mandatory screenings as required by law and dispense medication to students as indicated by the doctor's prescription. The school nurse keeps the Building Principal(s) and the Director of Special Education Services apprised of building and student health and wellness issues. They communicate with parents and teachers concerning student health. They provide organization and coordination in the delivery of healthcare services within the district, in collaboration with healthcare providers, administrators, teachers, parents and other staff. They are required to maintain acceptable health standards and the school health records. Additionally, the emergency treatment of student and employee health problems is also a requirement.
Expectations:
Responsible for accurate attendance recording Administers first aid and emergency treatment to students, employees, and visitors utilizing the protocols established by the State and District, when necessary Performs examinations and screening procedures, such as visual, auditory, scoliosis, as required by State Law Prepares and maintains health records; medical and dental Prepares Critical Care Plans for students as needed Dispenses medication as needed Reviews and keeps records in accordance with state and local protocols Provides care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness Observes the student population to identify any new health trends/needs that arise Works collaboratively with teacher aides, teachers, and school personnel with respect to medical supervision in place for students Prepares students' medications for class trips or when going off campus Maintains health records for students visiting for various programs (Alpha, band, orchestra etc.) Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students Advises administration on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and immunizations Notifies parents/guardian of illness or injury, as needed Arranges transportation of sick or injured student, employee, or visitor to hospital, as needed Orders and maintains inventory of medical supplies Attends in-service training programs, faculty meetings, district committees, staff meetings, conference days and professional development Comply with and follow all school safety and security procedures and protocols Other related duties as assigned by administration
Requirements:
Possession of license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse OR a Registered Professional Nurse Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, community members, and staff members
