Job Summary:
Medical Office Clerk - Emergency Medicine provides front-office administrative and patient support by managing incoming calls, determining patient eligibility, verifying demographic information, and scheduling, rescheduling, and canceling appointments using MHS GENESIS and related systems. Maintains accurate patient medical records and schedules by coordinating record retrieval, filing, quality reviews, documentation requests, reporting, and retirement of records in accordance with established regulations, procedures, and accreditation standards.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency. Basic medical terminology required.
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Experience:
Minimum two-years of relevant experience or Specialized Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator certification required. U.S. Citizenship is required
Key Responsibilities:
Answers main office phone line. Directs telephone calls to the appropriate section for assistance. Takes messages as required. Determines patient eligibility for services. Passes on general information. Validates basic patient demographic information on
MHS GENESIS
Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient schedules and logs. Utilized government computer system tools and standard protocols and procedures (detail codes, freezing slots, and TRICARE on-line usage) to facilitate maintenance of appointment slots, rescheduling options, or cancellation processing. Call patients as needed to schedule, reschedule, and/or cancel appointments. Promotes consult/referral specialty medical care within the MTF. Obtains updates and files medical records. Obtains documentation as requested by healthcare providers (test results or documentation not yet filed in records). Organizes and researches patient records, extract needed information, and reviews records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency within established guidelines. Initiates and locates patient medical records. Maintains medical records in accordance with prescribed directives. Conducts daily pull, delivery, and retrieval of patient records. Ensures arrival of medical records prior to appointment(s). Prepares reports regarding record statistics as necessary. Participates in records review as part of the facility's quality assurance program and in accordance with accreditation standards. Retires medical records in accordance with regulatory procedures and guidelines.
Work Environment & Schedule:
The emergency department is a 24 hour/7 day per week operation which includes: weekends, holidays, days, and night shifts.
Duty Hours:
Various shifts from a minimum of 4-hour shifts to a maximum of 12-hour shifts, not to exceed 40 hours a week. ER work weeks run from Sunday - Saturday. Contractors will get a 30 min lunch break when working 8-hour (or longer) shifts.
Physical requirements:
Requirements include prolonged walking, standing, sitting, or bending. Must be able to carry 25-50 pounds and reach high shelving units with the assistance of stepladders to retrieve and file medical records.
Compensation & Benefits:
