The School Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is a certified speech language specialist who provides and coordinates comprehensive speech and language programs and services to students disabled by disorders of language, speech, or hearing throughout the school district. The SLP provides both direct and indirect services, including parent and teacher consultation as deemed necessary and appropriate. Essential Responsibilities This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties: Assist school personnel, parents, and community agencies in obtaining appropriate programming for communication disabled students through evaluations, consultations, and therapy relating to individual students. Ensure implementation of screening and follow-up evaluation procedures utilized to identify communication disabled students as per
WAC 392-172A.
Utilize appropriate diagnostic instruments and techniques for determining essential IEP goal statements and related service needs. Provide remedial and/or developmental instruction to individual students requiring speech and language services. Monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic programs for individual students and adjust services accordingly. Provide and maintain complete records and reports for every student receiving assessment, instructional, and habilitative services. Provide for the improvement of speech and language programs, services, and instruction offered to students through in-service training of parents, teachers, SLP assistants, aides, and volunteers. Ensure continuity and coordination of speech and language services by providing for interoffice communication and relations with multi-disciplinary team members and other special education programs. Ensure the application of current educational practice and maintenance of clinical competency by participating in staff development activities. Be responsible for monitoring and assuring compliance with all district policy/procedures and rules and regulations (e.g., eligibility, evaluation, and placement) as specified for disabled students within
WAC 392-172A.
Demonstrate understanding of the essential requirements within IDEA and its application to the provision of compliant services for the disabled. Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Services Director. Desired Skills & Attributes Knowledge of sign language and augmentative and alternative communication preferred. Previous experience as a speech and language pathologist or in a closely related field within a public school setting preferred. Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity preferred
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certificate with School Speech Language Pathologist endorsement. Valid Washington State Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) license Master's degree in speech-language pathology Excellent oral and written communication skills Successful WA State Patrol and FBI fingerprinting clearance Proof of MMR immunization (if born 1/1/1957 or later) I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act Completion of all district-required trainings within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in and around a student learning environment; may be exposed to childhood diseases; may be required to balance and crouch, crawl, bend, or kneel; may be required to stand for prolonged periods; may be exposed to high noise levels; and may experience a multitude of demands and changing priorities with frequent interruptions.
Reports to:
Special Services Director Evaluation :
The School Speech Language Pathologist shall be evaluated periodically by the Special Services Director pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employee's performance of the above essential job functions.
