  • $34.19 POSITION SUMMARY The Surgical Coordinator
  • Medical Assistant is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical and administrative support to surgical providers, patients, and the surgical services team.
This position coordinates patient care and surgical services from the initial surgical recommendation through pre-operative preparation, scheduling, procedure coordination, and post-operative follow-up, while also performing Medical Assistant duties within the scope of training, certification, and applicable regulatory requirements.   • Medical Assistant serves as an important liaison among patients, providers, surgical facilities, specialty departments, and other members of the healthcare team.
The position requires excellent organizational, communication, clinical, and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate a patient-centered approach, maintain confidentiality, promote quality and safety, and support an efficient patient experience throughout the surgical care process Lastly, the incumbent will also support primary care, pediatrics, lab and additional specialties to ensure flexibility across the department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Surgical Coordination Coordinates surgical procedures and related patient services in collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, clinical staff, surgical facilities, and other healthcare professionals. Assists with scheduling surgical procedures, pre-operative appointments, diagnostic testing, consultations, and follow-up appointments. Coordinates required pre-operative documentation, medical clearances, laboratory testing, imaging, and other clinical requirements. Reviews patient records for completeness and identify outstanding requirements needed prior to surgery. Communicates surgical instructions, appointment information, preparation requirements, and other pertinent information to patients in a clear and understandable manner. Assists patients with questions regarding the surgical process and direct clinical questions to the appropriate provider or healthcare professional. Coordinates communication and collaboration with the healthcare team, patients, surgical facilities, and other involved departments. Monitors surgical schedules and assist in identifying scheduling conflicts, delays, cancellations, or other issues requiring intervention. Assists with obtaining and documenting necessary authorizations, referrals, and other requirements associated with surgical services, as applicable. Maintains accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record and other designated systems. Tracks surgical cases and follow up on outstanding clinical, administrative, or scheduling requirements. Assists with post-operative appointment coordination and follow-up activities. Escalates urgent, incomplete, or clinically significant issues to the appropriate provider or supervisor. Other duties assigned that are reasonably associated with the essential functions of the job as requested by the Site Administrator. Medical Assistant Functions Performs Medical Assistant duties within the employee's education, training, certification, and scope of practice. Prepares patients for examinations, procedures, and clinical visits. Obtains and document vital signs, medical histories, medication information, and other relevant patient information as directed. Assists providers with examinations and minor procedures as appropriate. Prepares and maintains examination and procedure rooms, supplies, and equipment. Performs or assists with approved clinical procedures consistent with organizational policies and applicable requirements. Collects and appropriately handles specimens as trained. Assists with patient education and reinforce provider-directed instructions. Enters and updates patient information timely and accurately in the electronic health record Supports providers and nurses for medication reconciliation and other clinical documentation processes as directed. Maintains appropriate infection prevention and control practices and follow Universal Precautions and personal protective equipment requirements. Recognizes and report changes in patient condition or other concerns to the appropriate licensed healthcare professional. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws and regulations. Other duties assigned that are reasonably associated with the essential functions of the job as requested by the Site Administrator.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS A.
Education High School diploma or equivalent required. Candidates with at least five (5) years of medical assisting and surgical coordination experience will be considered in lieu of diploma. Medical Assistant Diploma/Certificate. B. Qualifications/Experience Minimum of one (1) year experience in a medical practice environment as a Medical Assistant. Minimum of one (1) year experience in a medical practice environment as a Surgical Coordinator or equivalent. Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association Certified by any Medical Board of California Approved Medical Assistant Certifying Organizations preferred. C. Special Skills/Knowledge Knowledge of medical technology, procedural terminology and diagnostic codes. Ability to maintain a professional and patient care oriented attitude.
