SCOPE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Our Advanced Surgical Assistants with paramedic backgrounds perform the following clinical services:Medication Preparation & Management:
Obtaining and picking up required medications prior to surgery from Cubex Preparing sedation medications for surgeon administration Setting up and preparing medication infusion using IV pumps for surgeons Managing controlled substances through Cubex with safe audits, cycle counts, and appropriate documentation Ensuring medication compliance including which medications to hold/take before surgery(from Pre-op) Closed-loop communication to prevent medication errors Crash cart knowledge and emergency medication managementSurgical Support:
Assisting surgeons during procedures on table sides Surgical instrument setup and sterilization perCT,MA,RI, OSHA
regulations Straumann cabinet access and implant/kit knowledge Implant consolidation and tagging for individual patient tracking Anticipating surgeon and surgical team needs throughout proceduresPatient Care & Safety:
Anesthesia logs and intraoperative charting Accurate documentation and transfer of information into HopeRx system Pre-op instructions and post-op follow-up calls Setting appropriate patient expectations regarding procedures Understanding patient medical clearances and contraindications Monitoring patient vital signs and response during sedation Clear choiceClinical Competencies:
Observation and support during multiple sedation cases Knowledge of commonly used sedation medications, indications, and interactions Familiarity with procedure steps to anticipate team needs Emergency response readinessDEMONSTRATED VALUE TO PATIENT CARE AND SURGICAL EXCELLENCE
The paramedic background of our surgical assistants provides significant advantages: Enhanced Patient Safety Paramedics are trained in high-acuity emergency medicine and bring critical skills to the surgical environment: Advanced airway management capabilities Expert-level medication administration and dosing accuracy Rapid assessment and response to patient status changes Experience managing medical emergencies under pressure Proficiency in monitoring and interpreting vital signs Superior Medication Preparation & Management Paramedic training provides extensive pharmacology knowledge for safe medication preparation: Understanding of medication interactions, contraindications, and adverse reactions Experience with controlled substance protocols and documentation Ability to recognize and alert surgeons to potential medication-related complications Expertise in IV therapy setup and medication preparation Seamless Integration with Surgical Teams The training Tanisha Dyer provided to new team members demonstrates the transferability and depth of her skills: Tanisha's two-day training successfully covered observation of three sedation cases, Cubex management, sedation medications, proper setup infusion techniques, anesthesia documentation, closed-loop communication, medication clearances, crash cart protocols, and both suction-side and table-side surgical assistance New Advanced Surgical CDA`s with paramedic background enabled rapid comprehension and application of surgical protocols Operational Excellence With the Background of Paramedics, they bring valuable operational competencies: Strong documentation and charting accuracy (critical for compliance) Team-based communication skills honed in emergency environments Ability to maintain composure and perform under pressure Natural leadership in crisis situations Commitment to protocols and safety standards Specialized Dental Anesthesia Training (DAANCE) The AAOMS Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification demonstrates commitment to specialized dental surgical anesthesia: National certification specifically designed for oral and maxillofacial surgery settings Validates knowledge of anesthesia protocols specific to dental implant procedures Demonstrates ongoing professional development through continuing education requirements Recognized by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as the standard for anesthesia assistant competency Bridges paramedic emergency training with dental surgical environment expertiseCLINICAL COMPLIANCE AND LEGAL AUTHORIZATION
All medication preparation and clinical support performed by our surgical assistants occurs: Under direct supervision of licensed oral surgeons Within the scope of their Emergency Medical certifications In accordance with state regulations governing delegated medical procedures With appropriate documentation and chain of custody for controlled substances Our surgical assistants prepare medications but do not administer them - all medication administration is performed by the licensed oral surgeon. Surgical assistants do not independently diagnose, prescribe, or make clinical decisions outside the surgeon's direct orders and oversight.
