About Hampton Natural Foods Hampton Natural Foods is a family-owned, independent natural food store that has served the New Hampshire Seacoast since 1982. We carry vitamins and supplements, herbs and bulk goods, groceries, gluten-free and vegan products, body care, and gifts, with a strong commitment to local vendors and knowledgeable, friendly service. Our Mission is and always has been to care for and educate our customers on the best practices for living a healthy, vibrant, and happy life, while supplying the highest-quality products possible. Position Summary This role (in collaboration with the owner and store manager) runs point on how the store looks, sells, and connects. You'll be responsible for general merchandising decisions including what we carry, how it's priced, and how it's displayed along with buying, inventory control, and the store's marketing. You'll build our customer loyalty program and expand our presence on social channels and build partnerships with health and wellness businesses that share our standards all in an effort to grow our customer base and generate strong repeat business. You'll also work the register and sales floor regularly, because the best merchandising decisions come from talking to customers.

  • Store operations & customer service ~20% Key ResponsibilitiesStore Operations & Customer Service Work regular shifts on the register and sales floor: ring sales, handle payments, returns, and exchanges, and open or close the store Count drawers and reconcile daily sales Help customers find products and answer questions, including about supplements, herbs, and special diets; take and track special orders Help train part-time associates on merchandising standards, receiving, and store procedures Keep the store clean, stocked, and faced; flag facility and equipment issues to the Store Manager (per the store's policies and procedures) Bring customer feedback and product requests back into buying and merchandising decisions Merchandising & Category Management Own the store's product assortment for specific categories (supplements, herbs and bulk, grocery, refrigerated and frozen, body care, gifts); add, test, and discontinue items based on sales, margin, and customer demand Review category performance monthly: top and bottom sellers, sales per shelf foot, margin by category, and gaps versus customer requests Plan the store layout and shelf sets: maintain planograms or shelf maps so products are easy to find and space follows sales Design and rotate displays, endcaps, cross-merchandised sets, and seasonal resets (cold and flu, summer, holidays, gift season) Set retail prices using target margins and competitive checks; maintain price and item accuracy in the POS system Keep signage, shelf tags, sale tags, and product information cards clear, accurate, and consistent Plan a promotions calendar with vendor deals, in-store sales, sampling, and demos Showcase local vendors and what sets the store apart: the bulk herb section, specialty supplements, and hard-to-find brands Track natural products trends and new brands; keep current on relevant labeling and supplement regulations Marketing & Digital Manage the store's social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook): plan a content calendar, photograph products and displays, write posts, and respond to comments and messages Build and grow the customer email list, both in-store and online; write and send regular newsletters covering new products, promotions, events, and wellness education Maintain a strategic marketing and promotions calendar that outlines and plans for all in-store events & promotions, discount days, and focus items Tie marketing to merchandising: promote new arrivals, featured brands, and in-store sales across social, email, and signage at the same time Keep the website, Google Business Profile, and online listings current (hours, products, events) Track results (list growth, open and click rates, engagement, and promotion lift) and adjust based on what works Coordinate vendor co-marketing, such as brand-funded promotions, giveaways, and shared social content Wellness Partnerships Identify and build relationships with local and regional health and wellness businesses that share our standards for quality, transparency, and natural products — for example, practitioners, fitness and yoga studios, chiropractors, nutritionists, and like-minded brands Develop partnerships that benefit both sides: referral programs, co-hosted events and workshops, cross-promotions, member discounts, and product collaborations Explore business-to-business sales opportunities, such as supplying partner businesses, office wellness programs, or gift orders Represent the store at community events, farmers markets, and wellness fairs Vet partners and new brands against store standards before committing, and review partnerships regularly for results Buying & Vendor Management Place regular orders with distributors and direct vendors based on sales history, stock levels, seasonality, and budget Build and maintain relationships with vendors and local producers; negotiate pricing, deals, promotions, and payment terms Review weekly distributor deal sheets and take advantage of promotions that improve margin; communicate findings regularly to other buyers Evaluate new product pitches and sample requests against store standards, customer demand, and shelf space Resolve order discrepancies, shortages, damages, and credits with vendors Stay within the buying budget set by the Store Manager and owner Inventory Control Receive deliveries: check in product against invoices and purchase orders, note shortages or damage, and put product away Keep on-hand counts accurate in the POS/inventory system; conduct regular cycle counts and assist with full physical inventories Rotate stock (first in, first out) and monitor expiration dates, especially in supplements, refrigerated, frozen, and bulk Track and record shrink, spoilage, and out-of-date product; identify causes and suggest fixes Set and adjust par levels and reorder points to reduce out-of-stocks and overstock Keep the stockroom and backstock organized QualificationsRequired 3+ years of retail experience, including at least 1-2 years in merchandising, buying, or inventory management Working knowledge of natural foods, supplements, herbal remedies, and health and wellness products, and genuine interest in the category A strong eye for display and visual merchandising, with examples of sets or displays you've built Hands-on experience running social media for a business; comfortable writing posts and taking product photos Comfortable with the numbers: margins, markups, sell-through, and reading sales reports in POS software or spreadsheets Relationship builder who is comfortable reaching out to businesses, vendors, and community partners Organized, and able to switch between the sales floor and planning work throughout the day Cash handling and POS experience; availability for weekends and some holidays Preferred Category management or buying experience at a natural foods, co-op, grocery, or specialty retailer Experience with email marketing platforms (e.
g., Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Constant Contact) and design tools such as Canva Familiarity with natural products distributors (e.g., UNFI, KeHE) and direct-store vendors Existing network in the Seacoast health and wellness community Knowledge of herbs, vitamins, dietary supplements, or special diets (gluten-free, vegan, allergen-free) Experience training or supervising retail staff Physical Requirements Stand and walk for extended periods Lift and carry up to 40-50 lbs (cases, deliveries) Bend, reach, and climb a step stool to stock shelves and build displays What Success Looks Like Sales and margin grow in the categories you manage The store looks sharp, well-signed, and easy to shop, with displays that change regularly The email list and social following grow, and promotions show measurable lift An active set of wellness partners sends customers our way and co-hosts events Fewer out-of-stocks and less expired or overstocked product; inventory counts match the system Orders stay on budget and customers get their special orders on time
Pay:
$18.00 - $24.00 per hour Expected hours: No less than 32.0 per week
