Job Description

​ Sanctuary Kitchen Chef Job Description Position Overview CitySeed's mission is to engage the community in growing an equitable local food system that promotes economic development, community development, and sustainable agriculture. Our Sanctuary Kitchen social enterprise partners with new residents of Greater New Haven to build economic opportunity and intercultural understanding through food. Chefs prepare global cuisine, including dishes from their home countries, while also supporting kitchen operations and nurturing intercultural learning and community awareness. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. This role begins on a part-time, as-needed basis, with the potential for growth in hours and level of responsibility over time. Chefs report to the Sanctuary Kitchen Culinary Manager. Responsibilities Food Preparation
  • ​ Participate in food production to fulfll food service orders
  • ​ Practice highest standards of kitchen equipment usage and established safety systems
  • ​ Follow recipes as written to produce consistent results of end products
  • ​ Recommend appropriate ingredient replacements when needed
  • ​ Complete assigned production schedule in allotted time
  • ​ Recognize quality ingredients and use them effciently
  • ​ Understand and practice frst-in, frst-out (FIFO) procedures
  • ​ Demonstrate good decision making in production performance
  • ​ Adhere to guidelines for safe food handling Kitchen Maintenance
  • ​ Ensure that all cooking and food storage areas are maintained in sanitary, orderly condition meeting health department standards
  • ​ Follow proper storage and labeling procedures
  • ​ Use guidelines for waste management and recording
  • ​ Maintain equipment in working order
  • ​ Follow staffng schedules and guidelines Menu and Product Development 1
  • ​ Contribute recipes of your home country and culture to develop the Sanctuary Kitchen menu
  • ​ Participate in recipe standardization
  • ​ Contribute to food product development for the retail market Community Building
  • ​ Share your personal story and experience with Sanctuary Kitchen at special events
  • ​ Represent Sanctuary Kitchen and sell products at farmers' markets and community events
  • ​ Work alongside community volunteers Other Duties

  • ​ Cooking experience, including cooking for large groups; could be home/family cooking or in a professional setting
  • ​ Working knowledge of basic cooking techniques
  • ​ Willingness to learn and cook standardized recipes
  • ​ Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • ​ Well organized with good attention to detail
  • ​ Ability to meet deadlines
  • ​ Strong interpersonal skills, ability to take instructions and work as part of a team Preferred Qualifcations
  • ​ ServeSafe Food Handlers Certifcate
  • ​ Successful completion of the Sanctuary Kitchen Culinary Training Program
  • ​ Knowledge of recipes from your country and culture, and willingness to share and adapt them for the Sanctuary Kitchen menu Details
  • ​ Starting hourly wage of $17-$20, depending on experience
  • ​ Part-time role with varying schedules, including optional evenings and weekends for special events

  • ​ Work is physically demanding; chefs are regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, and reach with hands and arms
