Non-Exempt Position Summary The Sous Chef assists the Executive Chef in planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. This position helps oversee daily kitchen operations, supervises volunteers and kitchen staff, ensures food safety compliance, and supports the mission of providing welcoming, high-quality meals in a respectful and compassionate environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist with daily meal preparation, cooking, and service for large-volume community meals. Ensure meals are prepared according to recipes, nutrition standards, and food safety guidelines. Supervise kitchen volunteers during food preparation and service. Help train volunteers on proper food handling, sanitation, and kitchen procedures. Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen in accordance with local health department regulations. Monitor food inventory and assist with ordering, receiving, and rotating supplies using First-In, First-Out (FIFO) practices. Minimize food waste while maximizing the use of donated and purchased food items. Assist in menu planning based on available inventory, seasonal ingredients, and nutritional goals. Ensure proper storage, labeling, and temperature monitoring of food products. Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely and report maintenance needs. Fill in for the Executive Chef as needed. Foster a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for guests, volunteers, and staff. Support special events, holiday meals, and community outreach activities as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; culinary training preferred. Minimum of 2 years of commercial kitchen or institutional food service experience. Experience supervising volunteers is preferred. Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and commercial kitchen operations. ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe). Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to the mission of serving individuals experiencing food insecurity. Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Skills and Abilities Strong organizational and time-management skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to lead by example and mentor volunteers. Flexibility and problem-solving abilities. Basic computer skills for inventory, scheduling, or reporting. Ability to maintain professionalism and compassion in a mission-driven environment. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Bend, reach, stoop, and work in hot and cold environments. Ability to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment. Work Environment This position works primarily in a commercial kitchen serving community meals.
