Job Description

Sous Chef Hanna's on Main | Ware, MA Full-Time | 40-50 Hours/Week $900-$1,100/week, based on experience Mondays & Tuesdays Off | Shift Meal Provided Hanna's on Main is looking for an experienced, hands-on Sous Chef to serve as a key leader in our small, scratch-driven kitchen. We're an independent restaurant serving approachable American food with an elevated twist. Our kitchen works with everything from steaks and seafood to house-made specials, soups, sauces, desserts, and rotating seasonal dishes. We're looking for someone who can help lead the kitchen, manage the team, and maintain our standards while still being comfortable jumping on the line and cooking alongside the crew. The Role The Sous Chef works directly with ownership and serves as a second-in-command in the kitchen , helping oversee day-to-day kitchen operations and staff. This is a leadership position, but it isn't an office position. You'll be actively involved in service while also directing the kitchen team, making decisions, solving problems, and keeping the operation organized.
Responsibilities include:
Directing and supervising kitchen employees during prep and service Assigning work and ensuring daily prep and production are completed Leading service and making operational decisions when needed Training, coaching, and evaluating kitchen employees Establishing performance expectations and holding staff accountable Providing input on hiring, scheduling, employee performance, discipline, and staffing decisions Maintaining food quality, consistency, portioning, and presentation Overseeing proper food handling, sanitation, storage, and product rotation Monitoring inventory, ordering needs, waste, and food costs Helping maintain pars and prep systems Contributing ideas for specials and seasonal menu development Communicating clearly with ownership and front-of-house leadership Stepping onto stations and cooking alongside the team when needed Who Will Do Well Here You're someone who sees the whole kitchen — not just your station. You notice when prep is falling behind, when a cook needs direction, when quality isn't where it should be, or when something needs to be handled — and you take ownership of it. You can give direction without creating unnecessary drama. You stay composed when service gets busy, communicate clearly, and understand that being a leader means setting the standard yourself. Most importantly, you lead from the line, not from the office. We don't expect perfection, but we do expect reliability, accountability, good judgment, and pride in the work. Experience Previous sous chef, kitchen management, or comparable restaurant leadership experience is preferred. Strong all-around line experience is required. Candidates should be comfortable and confident working across all kitchen stations and able to step in wherever needed during prep and service. We're also willing to consider an experienced lead cook who is ready to step into genuine kitchen management and has demonstrated the leadership, judgment, and technical ability necessary for the position. Compensation & Schedule $900-$1,100 per week, based on experience Approximately 40-50 hours per week Consistent Mondays and Tuesdays off Shift meal provided Full-time position About Hanna's Hanna's on Main is a locally owned independent restaurant in Ware, Massachusetts. We're a small team, which means every person in the kitchen matters — especially its leaders. We take our food seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. We're looking for someone who wants ownership over their role, enjoys developing a strong team, and takes pride in running a consistent kitchen. If you're looking for a kitchen where you can lead, cook, contribute ideas, and have a real impact , we'd like to hear from you. Please apply with your resume and a brief introduction about your kitchen leadership experience and what you're looking for in your next position.
