Gilbert House Restaurant
Prep Cook / Line Cook
Job Description
Prep Cook / Line Cook We're looking for someone skilled in kitchen prep who is also ready to jump onto the line in our busy breakfast and lunch restaurant. The right person will be able to contribute in the prep kitchen from day one. You should be comfortable reading and accurately following recipes, using a knife efficiently, completing prep lists, managing your time, and producing consistent work without needing every step explained to you. You should also have enough line experience to begin working stations such as the grill and salads/sandwiches with some training on our specific menu and systems. Breakfast and egg-station experience is a big plus, but you do not have to be an expert on eggs immediately. We are willing to help a strong cook develop into omelets, over-easy eggs, and our busiest breakfast stations. What you'll be preparing We are a scratch-made kitchen. Depending on the day and station, you may: Follow recipes and complete daily prep lists accurately and efficiently Safely and consistently cut vegetables, meats, and other ingredients Make items such as homemade gravy, apple cider sauce, hollandaise, batters, dressings, and more Prepare and portion ingredients for the line Work the grill and salads/sandwiches stations Cook pancakes, French toast, country-fried steak, breakfast meats, sandwiches, and other menu items Learn our egg station, including omelets and eggs cooked to temperature Check the quality of food before it leaves the kitchen Notice when something does not look right and correct it without waiting to be told Keep your station stocked, clean, organized, and ready for service Help with dishes, cleaning, closing, and other kitchen responsibilities as needed We'll train you on our recipes, menu, and standards. However, we need someone who already understands the fundamentals of professional kitchen prep and can hit the ground running. Baking experience Some baking may be included in this position. Because we make many items in-house, you may help prepare muffins, cookies, cinnamon rolls, pastries, or other baked goods. Professional baking experience is not required. Experience is a strong plus, but we are also interested in someone who is excited to learn, follows recipes precisely, and takes pride in developing new skills. If you are already a strong baker, even better. One Team, Every Task We are a small kitchen with a close-knit crew. Our philosophy is One Team, Every Task . That means we pay attention, anticipate what needs to happen next, and step in to help without waiting to be asked. You will not be assigned one station and left there all day. You may work on prep between tickets, jump into a different station during a rush, wash a load of dishes, restock a teammate, or help clean the grill at the end of the day. There is no room in our kitchen for ego, drama, or toxicity. Skill matters, but so do humility, reliability, communication, and a positive attitude. We expect every employee to treat coworkers with respect and care about the success of the entire restaurant—not only their individual station. Our mission Our mission is friendly service, scratch-made food, and rooted in community. The kitchen is essential to delivering that mission. Every plate should reflect care, consistency, and pride. We want someone who understands that even though they may work behind the scenes, their work can still make someone's day. We also want cooks who care enough to "read the plate." If food is repeatedly coming back unfinished, a dish does not look right, or a guest has a concern, we want you to pay attention, communicate, and help us understand what needs to improve. What we're looking for You may be a strong fit if you: Have professional prep-kitchen experience Can read, understand, and consistently follow recipes Have solid knife skills and work safely Can complete prep accurately and at the pace required for service Have some professional line-cooking experience Are prepared to work the grill and other line stations with limited training Are willing to learn or strengthen your breakfast and egg-station skills Stay organized and calm when the restaurant gets busy Anticipate needs instead of waiting for constant direction Take feedback well and want to keep improving Care about quality and notice when something is not right Are dependable, punctual, and ready to work Will help wherever needed, including with dishes and cleaning Schedule Shifts may begin as early as 6:00 a.m. We close at 2:00 p.m. , with additional time needed afterward for cleaning and closing. Team members are generally finished by approximately 3:00 p.m., depending on the season and the needs of the day. Occasional additional shifts may be available for in-house catering or special events. Availability for these opportunities is helpful but not required. Weekend and holiday availability is generally required, but time off is never denied when it's requested (as long as it's reasonably requested per our policies). Compensation Pay is based on experience and demonstrated ability. We generally start around $16 or $17 per hour , with a performance evaluation after 30 days and the possibility of an adjustment based on your actual performance. Starting pay is negotiable and will be discussed during the interview process. Final candidates may be invited to complete a paid working interview so we can evaluate practical skills such as recipe comprehension, knife work, organization, food safety, communication, and readiness for prep and line responsibilities, which also will lend to the starting pay negotiation. Interested? Apply through Indeed. Want to stand out? After you apply, send us a message answering the following questions: Why do you want to work at OUR restaurants over other restaurants? What types of kitchen prep can you confidently complete without additional training? Which line stations have you worked, and how comfortable are you with a grill and breakfast cooking? Tell us about your experience reading recipes and preparing scratch-made sauces, batters, dressings, or similar items. What baking experience do you have, or what would you be interested in learning? What does "One Team, Every Task" mean to you? What is your availability, including weekends and occasional special events?
