Athletic Director and/or Building Administration Position Summary The Aquatics Director is responsible for the overall management, supervision, safety, and operation of the school district's aquatic facilities and programs. This position oversees pool operations, staffing, maintenance coordination, safety procedures, scheduling, and compliance with applicable district policies and health and safety regulations. The Aquatics Director works collaboratively with the Athletic Director, school administration, coaches, faculty, staff, students, and community organizations to ensure a safe, organized, and efficient aquatic environment that supports educational, athletic, and recreational programming. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Aquatic Facility Operations Oversee the daily operation and supervision of the school's swimming pool and associated aquatic facilities. Develop and implement operating procedures for pool use, opening, closing, and facility access. Coordinate pool scheduling for physical education classes, interscholastic athletics, practices, competitions, community programs, and approved outside organizations. Ensure appropriate supervision and security of the aquatic facility. Monitor pool conditions, cleanliness, water quality, temperature, and equipment functionality. Coordinate routine maintenance, repairs, and facility improvement needs with district maintenance personnel. Maintain accurate records of facility usage, inspections, incidents, and operational activities. 2. Safety and Risk Management Develop, implement, and periodically review aquatic safety procedures and emergency action plans. Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local health and safety requirements, district policies, and pool operating standards. Ensure required lifeguard coverage, supervision, and safety equipment are in place during all scheduled activities. Monitor staff certifications, including lifeguarding, CPR/AED, first aid, and other required credentials. Coordinate emergency response procedures and staff training, including emergency drills. Report accidents, injuries, safety concerns, and incidents to the appropriate district administrators. Identify potential hazards and take appropriate action to address unsafe conditions. Ensure proper chemical storage, handling, and pool water testing procedures are followed by appropriately trained personnel. 3. Personnel Management and Supervision Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise lifeguards, aquatic personnel, and other assigned staff, as authorized by district administration. Establish staff expectations regarding professionalism, attendance, safety, customer service, and job performance. Maintain accurate staffing schedules, time records, certifications, and training documentation. Conduct staff orientations and provide ongoing professional development related to aquatic safety and facility operations. Address personnel concerns and communicate performance issues to the appropriate administrator. Ensure adequate staffing levels for all scheduled aquatic activities. 4. Athletic Program Coordination Collaborate with the Athletic Director and coaching staff to coordinate water polo, swimming, and diving practices, competitions, and other aquatic athletic activities. Assist with meet scheduling, facility preparation, equipment setup, and coordination of visiting teams and officials. Ensure that pool availability, lane assignments, equipment, and staffing support athletic schedules. Coordinate facility access and operational needs for preseason, regular-season, postseason, and offseason activities. Assist with identifying equipment needs and recommending improvements to support the district's aquatic athletic programs. 5. Budget, Equipment, and Inventory Assist in monitoring the aquatic facility's operating budget. Maintain an inventory of pool equipment, safety equipment, supplies, and operational materials. Recommend equipment purchases, repairs, and replacement needs. Monitor expenditures and ensure responsible use of district resources. Coordinate purchasing and vendor services in accordance with district policies and procedures. Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and manage costs. 6. Compliance and Documentation Maintain required pool inspection records, water quality logs, staff certifications, maintenance records, and incident reports. Ensure compliance with applicable health department requirements, building and fire safety regulations, and other relevant standards. Coordinate required inspections and communicate deficiencies or corrective actions to district administration. Maintain and update written aquatic facility policies, procedures, and emergency documentation. Ensure outside organizations and facility users comply with district policies, rental agreements, and established safety requirements. 7. Communication and Community Relations Serve as a primary point of contact for aquatic facility operations. Communicate facility schedules, closures, maintenance needs, and operational changes to appropriate personnel. Collaborate with district administrators, coaches, teachers, staff, students, parents, and approved community organizations. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and respect within the aquatic facility. Address questions and concerns professionally and refer matters to district administration when appropriate. Qualifications and Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or training in aquatics, recreation management, sports administration, or a related field preferred. Demonstrated experience in pool operations, aquatics management, lifeguard supervision, or a related field. Current lifeguard, CPR/AED, and first aid certifications Certified Pool Operator (CPO), Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), or equivalent certification preferred or required as determined by the district. Knowledge of pool safety, water quality management, emergency response, facility operations, and applicable regulations. Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Ability to supervise staff, manage schedules, maintain records, and coordinate multiple activities. Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and address operational concerns. Required background clearances and other employment requirements applicable to school district personnel. Work Schedule and Physical Requirements Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, athletic competitions, and special events. Must be able to work in a warm, humid aquatic environment and around pool chemicals in accordance with established safety procedures. May require standing, walking, bending, lifting, and moving equipment. Must be able to perform assigned emergency response duties consistent with required certifications and district expectations.
