Custodian & Events Assistant
JOB POSTING
Part-time, hourly, non-exempt (overtime eligible), not benefit-eligible.
Regular Schedule:
Custodian:
Part-Time (16 hours/week): Sunday - Monday, 10:00 AM - 6:30 PM.
Events Assistant:
Eligible to sign up for additional evening and weekend event shifts. These events often go past midnight and are eligible for overtime pay. Organization Overview Love science? Animals? Position Summary The Custodian & Events Assistant reports to both the Facility Operations Manager and the Senior Manager of Event Rentals and is responsible for keeping our campus, exhibits, and public spaces clean, safe, and welcoming as our daytime Day Porter, while also supporting the setup and breakdown of evening and weekend rental events for our Facility Rentals department. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Day Porter & Custodial Support (daily shift, 10:00 AM - 6:30 PM). Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Campus Cleanliness:
Perform continuous rounds of the indoor museum spaces, outdoor walkways, and public areas to maintain a pristine, debris-free environment.
Restroom Upkeep:
Monitor, clean, sanitize, and restock all public and staff restrooms throughout the day.
Sanitization:
Wipe down and disinfect high-touch surfaces, interactive exhibits, handrails, and common area furniture to ensure a healthy environment for children and families.
Waste Management:
Routinely empty, clean, and re-line trash, recycling, and compost bins across the campus.
Rapid Response:
Respond promptly and cordially to radio calls for accidental spills, urgent cleaning needs, or light facility maintenance.
Inventory Tracking:
Monitor janitorial and facility supply levels, notifying leadership when supplies need ordering. 2. Event Assistant helps with the setup and breakdown before and after special events, weddings, birthday parties, and corporate rental events, which frequently occur in the evenings.
This may include:
Event Setup & Breakdown:
Assist the Facility Rentals team by moving, arranging, and setting up event infrastructure, including tables, chairs, and basic AV equipment, according to floor plans.
Post-Event Reset:
Efficiently break down event setups, clear trash, recycling, and compost, and return rental spaces to their original state, preparing the museum to open to the public the following morning.
Safety & Compliance:
Ensure emergency exits, pathways, and fire extinguishers remain unobstructed during event setups. Knowledge, Skills & Attributes Prior experience in custodial work, janitorial services, day portering, and/or event production/hospitality is highly preferred. Ability to communicate politely and effectively with museum guests, rental clients, and internal staff via two-way radio and in person. Fluency in English is required. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred. A proactive mindset with the ability to think critically and independently, work from a daily checklist, and adapt to shifting priorities. Candidates who work hard, show up on time, and are reliable will excel at CuriOdyssey. Dependable attendance for your weekly schedule and willingness to occasionally stay late for event support are required. Education & Experience No specific degree is required. Prior experience in custodial work, janitorial services, day portering, and/or event production or hospitality is highly preferred. Physical Requirements & Work Environment Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, push/pull, and lift/move heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) such as tables, chairs, and large trash bins. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions (typical of Coyote Point Recreation Area). Comfortable working in a high-energy environment filled with children, families, and proximity to non-releasable wildlife. This position only cleans animal habitat areas that are accessible to the public. Special Requirements All positions at CuriOdyssey require candidates to take and pass a DOJ fingerprint background check and a drug test, paid for by the employer. A satisfactory driving history from the Department of Motor Vehicles may be required for insurance purposes.
