A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
Under general supervision, to plan and perform cleaning work in an assigned area, school plant or installation; and to do related work as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Sweeps, scrubs, waxes and polishes concrete, linoleum and tile floors; vacuums and shampoos rugs and carpets; cleans and dusts walls, furniture, woodwork, lockers, blackboards and other equipment; washes, scrubs and disinfects restrooms; cleans windows, doors, glass and drinking fountains; cleans and polishes metal work such as door panels and hand railings; empties and cleans waste containers; maintains equipment used in the course of work; assists school personnel in lifting and storing of supplies; moves and rearranges chairs, tables, desks and other equipment; replaces light globes; turns on and off lights and heaters as directed; maintains various classroom and restroom supplies including towels, soap tissue and other sanitary items; may set up, open and close classrooms and other school facilities for various community activities and services; reports needed repair work to proper authority; performs minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment; requisitions custodial supplies and equipment; inspects building for fire, sanitary and safety hazards; safeguards school property and equipment; performs special custodial work upon request of supervisory personnel; does thorough cleaning of facilities during vacation periods; may perform groundsman and grounds duties incidental to regular assignments. Does painting on different occasions on building inside and out, furniture and playground equipment, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to ensure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of:
Modem cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment; requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Ability to:
Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency; perform heavy physical labor; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
