This role is responsible for daily custodial work, exhibit upkeep, routine maintenance, and basic repair support throughout the Museum. In addition to maintaining a clean and welcoming environment, the Museum Porter will help monitor exhibit conditions, respond to repair needs, assist with installations and resets, and support the Lead Porter with facilities-related projects. The ideal candidate has custodial or porter experience along with practical maintenance, repair, or exhibit-support experience. This role is well suited for someone who is comfortable using basic hand and power tools, can identify issues proactively, and enjoys helping maintain a safe, engaging, and high-functioning environment for children, families, staff, and visitors. Key Responsibilities Daily Cleaning, Safety & Museum Readiness Perform regular cleaning of museum spaces, including restrooms, floors, surfaces, exhibits, play areas, offices, and common areas. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, including handrails, tables, chairs, doors, exhibit components, and guest-facing materials. Remove trash and recycling, replace liners, and monitor waste levels in high-traffic areas. Spot-clean spills, stains, debris, and other guest-facing issues throughout the day. Maintain restroom cleanliness, restock supplies, and respond quickly to sanitation concerns. Dust and wipe down surfaces, signage, counters, display cases, and other public-facing areas. Help ensure the Museum remains clean, safe, inviting, and ready for guests throughout operating hours. Exhibits, Installations & Guest-Facing Maintenance Support the care, upkeep, and basic troubleshooting of exhibits and interactive guest-facing elements. Monitor exhibits for wear, damage, cleanliness, safety concerns, or functionality issues, and report or address concerns as appropriate. Assist with exhibit resets, temporary installations, gallery rotations, signage, labels, graphics, props, and related materials. Support the movement, setup, and strike of exhibit components, furniture, fixtures, and event materials. Assist with repair, touch-ups, painting, and adjustments to exhibit elements as needed. Help maintain exhibit materials, tools, supplies, and work areas in an organized and safe condition. Support safe installation and handling practices under the direction of the Lead Porter or other designated team members. Facilities, Maintenance & Repair Support Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs across museum spaces with guidance from the Lead Porter. Respond to real-time maintenance needs, urgent cleaning requests, and light repair issues during operating hours. Assist with general repairs such as tightening hardware, replacing small parts, paint touch-ups, minor carpentry, and other basic facilities tasks. Use hand tools and basic power tools safely and appropriately. Help inspect spaces, fixtures, equipment, and guest-facing areas for safety, cleanliness, and needed repairs. Support larger maintenance or facilities projects led by the Lead Porter or senior staff. Assist with setup and breakdown for events, programs, rentals, and special projects. Help maintain and organize janitorial, facilities, and maintenance supplies, reporting inventory or replacement needs as needed. Weekly, Monthly & As-Needed Tasks Perform deeper cleaning of exhibit materials, furniture, educational tools, and guest-facing areas. Complete high-dusting, detailed restroom cleaning, glass cleaning, floor care, and other scheduled cleaning tasks. Assist with machine-scrubbing floors, buffing, lifting removable flooring, or other periodic deep-cleaning projects as assigned. Support special cleaning, repair, exhibit, or facilities projects based on museum needs. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
